After 2 preseason games my biggest take away is I wish we had signed Whiteside to a minimum deal. I am super excited about Wiseman, I like Chriss and Looney but we are desperately lacking in big, strong interior defenders/rebounders.
Obviously the shooting is a concern, but the biggest red flag to me last night, by far, was the defense. Especially the PnR defense. They need Dray and, surprisingly, Paschall out there. Was really really disappointed in Wiggins D. Back in the primadonna days I get the lack of effort. But he has to know that his contract is seen as among the worst in basketball, if not the worst, because he is seen as not good. And that his future as someone who's not buried on the bench or out of the NBA altogether is to become an asset on the defensive end of the floor. Because it doesn't look like he'll ever be an efficient scorer with that shooting ability. I know it's the preseason, but guys were working out there. Just not him.
Didn't watch the whole game but Wiggins having 2 steals and 3 blocks indicates good defensive engagement regardless of how he looks offensively (the whole team looks a bit disjointed offensively, I think if Wiggins will have success on that end it'll have to be in a more structured, simplified role).
For anyone who watched the game, how did he look defensively? Are the blocks and steals misleading?
I love JTA as a dude, but I'd like to see a lot of Sutton and maybe Toupane in the third game. JTA is a known quantity and hasn't been all that impressive, while Sutton looked pretty solid in the 4th quarter, and Toupane could use more of a look as well.
Shots in the paint -- 1st half: 3/13... 2nd half: 22/32. Started getting to the basket rather than looking for 3s and got back into the game.
Nico checked in with 6:16 left and was mainly guarding Guy. Up until the last two plays, Guy had only attempted one shot (missed) and had 2 TOs. Last two plays, Nico switched both times and it led to a Guy assist and the game winner.
Players still getting back into rhythm. So many bobbled balls and silly TOs.
The shooting looks rough. It's definitely going to have to be a transition offense based team, or some Curry magic if transition isn't there. If Wiseman is good right away defensively, then they can have a great defense and transition attack, and that's how they'll have to score their points.
They desperately need Looney or Chriss or Paschall or Wiggins or Oubre to level up with their outside shooting ability. Or perhaps Poole, but I don't know, I'm still not sold on him being all that useful for this team.
@Sleepy I honestly hated the pick BUT it's a second round pick. Nothing he did tonight swayed me one way or the other about how I feel Mannion will do in the NBA (not great) but it's a 2nd round pick. Those are the type of flyers I suppose you have to take. My issue is when you trade two second rounders to get Smailigic. Other than that it's meh. Like I said get a limited player but that can shoot lights out OR get a 4 year older experienced prospect like Paschall.
Like I get what the Warriors look for in their scouting. Jacob Evans is probably the worst translation but at least I get what they lwere looking for when they drafted him (smart, high floor, multi faceted, can guard multiple positions)
I just wish at some point they would just take some more flyers on second round and undrafted FAs that can't do much more than just shoot lights out. Guy may never have another game like tonight but the only young dude on our bench that comes close to shooting lights out is Mulder and even hes in danger of not making this roster
How was Nico ever the #4 prospect in thr draft (per SI at this time last year)? 6-2, unathletic, can’t shoot to save his life, and I’m not impressed with his decision-making. Bleh.
Preview: Wiseman, Green are back, but won't be ready tonight against Kings

Random things.

The +/- in the box score says JTA was 0 and everyone else was negative. How is that possible if the Warriors lost by 1 point?

Hey Abaddon what part of St Louis you from?
Ugly game, but foul shooting was the difference. Great comeback so all was not forgotten.
Hottest shooter on the night got a clean look and hits it for sac. good for him.

That was fun and a there were some bright spots. After Chriss and Mannion’s unspectacular first game, it was especially nice to see them shine.
Lol
Lmao well, I'm not going to do a quick recap on this preseason game. But I'll get something up in the morning.
Fun game!
We are in for some ugly stretches of Warriors basketball this year - but a whole lotta heart!
