It will be good to go 1-2 the next 3 games and go into the break 3 games over 500. Come back post all star break with Steph and KP for the stretch run.

Steve Kerr said the Warriors plan is to hold Kristaps Porzingis out the next three games, keep him working in San Francisco during the All-Star break and debut him out of the break.

Per Slater

Also per Slater:

Steph Curry hasn’t been ruled out of the next two games, but Kerr also indicated that Warriors could hold Curry out to the All-Star break to let him get his knee right. Called him doubtful for Monday.

[SkyHawks PR] The College Park Skyhawks have acquired a 2026 first round pick (via RCR) and a 2026 second round pick (from SBL via LIN) from the Santa Cruz Warriors in exchange for guard Deivon Smith

Deivon Smith is definitely maybe worth a first rounder, but giving up an unprotected first AND a second?!?!?! What are we even doing!!! Wasting (checks notes) Bolden's prime!

In the first game of this season, the Warriors beat the Lakers in LA 119 to 109.

The starting line up for this game was Curry, Podz, Kuminga, Butler, and Green. Hield led all bench players with 22 minutes. Kuminga played 33 minutes, and Podz played 32 minutes.

(Post played 8 1/2 and Santos played 2 1/2 in the Warriors' road opener.)

So tonight, the Warriors are missing 4 of their top 6 players from that game, and of the two who remain, Podz is 10-38 (26%) and Green is 10-36 (28%) from the field over their last 5 games!

So here are all the players who played in that game who are available tonight and the minutes they all booked in the first game of the season:

32:32 Podz (playing his worst basketball of the season by far over his past 2 games and still listed as just probable because of illness)

28:24 Green (who has posted a negative box plus/minus in 10 of his last 11 games)

20:15 Horford (playing great since Christmas, but limited to 28 minutes)

13:35 Richard

12:04 GPII

8:34 Post

2:39 Santos

Players who did not play in the Warriors' first game who are available tonight:

Melton (limited to 24 minutes)

Moody

Spencer

maybe Cryer & Leons?

The Lakers basically have everyone who normally plays other than Luka, plus Luke Kennard, perhaps the best shooter in the NBA this season, who was somehow awarded to them by Adam Silver as their annual something for nothing prize.

On paper, the Lakers should be at least 10 point favorites, but hopefully an energized Warriors squad can get back to stealing the ball every other possession.

Sabiscrashingout.'s avatar

I for one am looking forward to the Podz & Porz show.

Mr Teal's avatar

Why? Because as much of a connector as he is, Pods isn't a good passer in terms of making quick reads and threading tight windows. Spencer is going to be a much better Porzingis partner I'm guessing.

stickdog's avatar

I am as well, but according to the injury report, Podz is only probable and Porz has been ruled out for this game.

Al Horford interview in The Athletic. Preach!

What has surprised you most about the Steph experience so far?

Man, just the amount of times that the dude gets fouled and grabbed. I feel like there’s always a point of emphasis about freedom of movement and when I wasn’t his teammate, I didn’t see him enough to know. But the way that (defenders) grab him and hang onto him and pull him constantly, if that’s happening to any other guy, they’re calling those fouls, but with him, I guess you can’t call it every time. But there’s like ways, right? Certain guys you’re able to grab a little bit, but with him it’s like they’re hugging, holding his chest, pulling him, it’s constant.

The dude doesn’t get calls and the guy doesn’t complain. He literally just plays through it, finds a way and doesn’t make excuses. Mentally, that’s what has really surprised me. Because he’s just so resilient and able to keep from letting any of that stuff affect his process. Because he goes from not touching the ball, not getting certain things, to all of a sudden scoring 15 points in a row or something crazy like that. Or creating all these opportunities for the rest of us. So I’ve just been impressed that he doesn’t get enough calls. As a basketball fan, you watch it, you’re like, anybody else that’s getting grabbed like that — it’s a foul. With him, it’s nothing.

cannothoop's avatar

i just hope as more and more and more high profile folks say this that the refs decide to start calling it a bit more - hell 20% more could make a difference

Mr Teal's avatar

Yeah just a few calls will force adjustments

Willy White Shoes's avatar

And if they're EARLIER in the game....

GlueAndBold's avatar

I really hope more and more people come to understand this, because it frames his accomplishments in a different way that is not part of the dominant narrative, and really elevates him to the highest of the high status in my opinion. Essentially, if he had ever gotten a normal superstar's whistle, he'd have far more points than he does. Far more. Sometimes I cynically wonder if it's because he's the greatest FT shooter of all-time, and refs just subconsciously think it's unfair.

BayesGT's avatar

Maybe i’m overthinking it, but planning on filling slots 14 and 15 with two PGs feels like they’re saying Steph’s going to be out for a long time. Otherwise you’re just planning on not playing one of them, which would be odd given that we currently have clear depth issues at 3 & 4

Willy White Shoes's avatar

What's the consensus - leaving the 15tgh slot open for now? (save money, and potential buyouts?)

GlueAndBold's avatar

More like awareness that Steph's fragile right now, methinks.

Lonzo Ball has taken 77 shots inside the three point line in the last four years. Perhaps not the greatest sign regarding his physical state.

There is only one person who can even enter Curry's GOAT Warrior space at this point and it's you, Rick. Fixing Porzingis and Ball might be the equivalent of three championships (OPJ was the fourth). Time to become a legend.

DFiB's avatar

Did we sign him already?

Sabiscrashingout.'s avatar

They are reportedly wanting to review his medical records first.

Loon Gehrig's avatar

"[Spears] Hawks say Jonathan Kuminga, who sustained a left knee bone bruise while playing for Golden State at Dallas on Jan. 22, will be re-evaluated following the All-Star break."

belilaugh's avatar

Guess it wasn't a fake injury then

Captain Jack's avatar

Lonzo isn’t a wing but at least he’s not a 6’2” guard so we got that going for us. If he can get back to Pelicans form that’s a great deal for us moving forward. I believe his “return to form” phase is taking longer than usual since he was out for so long.

Loon Gehrig's avatar

"[Charania] The Golden State Warriors are signing two-way guard Pat Spencer to a contract for the rest of the season, Mark Bartelstein and Ross Aroyo of @PrioritySports tell ESPN."

DubsNerd's avatar

Did his contract just say it was between Golden State and "him"?

Sabiscrashingout.'s avatar

Win it for the Lacrosse player boys.

Sabiscrashingout.'s avatar

Also update to the injury report: For the Hawks Buddy is available to play. JK is still out but he's no longer listed as trade pending.

JZAlvarado's avatar

A late afternoon game in LA preceded by a Friday night stay with Draymond anchoring this team Unbelievable that any of you have this at anything less than a 20 point blowout in favor of the Lakers

fzwinter's avatar

It's a testament to Pat Spencer that there's lots of consternation here about whether we'll be able to convert him to a regular roster spot before tonight's game.

Loon Gehrig's avatar

Thanks for the heads up about the early start, should still be a fun game even without Porziņģis.

I like that so far, the sheer energy and effort of the team is doing its best to stop the stealth tank. Win or lose, there will still be effort, even if it often falls short.

Hopefully we can a least tread water until Curry comes back (not sure we can ever count on Porziņģis playing). We could lose 2/3 of our games and still end up with only a 10% chance at top 4, so playing hard (which we should always do anyway) might not affect too much.

There is still a huge gap between 10th and 11th in the West. We could end up 10+ games under .500 (don't think we would) and still make the play-in (assuming Utah is still tanking this season, which they should be. If we lost to the 9th-seed, we could have potentially have a top-10ish pick (depending on a few Eastern Conference teams). Memphis is a bit of a wild-card, but without JJJ, they probably aren't going to catch us, even with Edey coming back later in the season.

On the opposite end, we're still only 3 1/2 games out of 6th and 4 out of 4th. It's unlikely we win playoff series without Butler, but why not try? The worst that could happen is we fail to get out of the play-in and end up with a pick in the 13 to 20 (at the absolute worst) range.

Most likely (even if we try our hardest), Charlotte, Miami, and Orlando pass us, leaving us with the 14th pick. Maybe Kawhi wills the Clippers past us, but maybe not. Maybe the Hawks rally past us, too. That still leaves us at 12, with about a 10% chance at top 4. To get a much better (20%) chance, though, we'd have to fall to 9th-worst, which is a bit of stretch considering we're seven games ahead of the Bucks.

TL:DR: Just try to win, it's much better to watch anyway, and it might only make a difference of 3-4 spots in the draft (although this is supposed to be a deep draft)

Chaos_Samedi's avatar

We could easily win a series or two with a healthy lineup, curry green and porzingis is no joke.

Loon Gehrig's avatar

definitely, we're a better team than last year before the deadline and any games Porziņģis plays in we'll have a chance. Although thanks to the Butler injury, we really only have a shot at the 8th or maybe 7th seed, so OKC or Spurs (although maybe the pressure gets to the Spurs in their 1st playoff series with this core?)
