It sucks, but at the same time when you have a #2 pick on the roster who hasn't played, you have to play him. The only way out of that would have been trading him in the offseason.
Yet another way the two timeline plan makes things harder.
Eh, everybody takes their own strategy to get to the end. If you pressure yourself to get fully engaged on Game 1 of the regular season and push 100% all the way through the regular season, you might not be ready for the playoffs... or you might be! It's a gamble either way.
Of course losses like the Utah game, the first Pacers game, the Charlotte game, and the Detroit/Orlando games are unacceptable... The first 10 games of the season went as poorly as possible, for sure.
Frankly, I looked at the stretch of games between mid-Jan and end of Feb, and really nothing there really scares me. If we get Steph & Wiggs back, and Jordan & Klay settle in a little more, and DDV & JK anneal their roles, then we could easily be a 0.750 team in that stretch and get to the ASB in good shape. Kerr can also shorten the rotation to a heavy starters 8 man playoff rotation.
EDIT: Assuming we go 1-3 the rest of the road trip, 4-4 on the home stand, then get Steph back, and have a good stretch to go 15-6, we're at 34-28 heading into March... with 20 games STILL left in the season. It's a long season. Friendly reminder that the vaunted Celtics were under 0.500 at this point last season before going on a huge run.
How many games does a player need to play to be considered for mvp? In the chance that Steph comes back and we get into a top 4 seed he should have a decent chance, but wondering if he needs to meet a minimum amount of games played.
The Warriors will also remain without Andrew Wiggins tomorrow night against the Sixers, I'm told. It'll be his sixth straight missed game with an adductor strain.
Golden State Warriors All-NBA star Stephen Curry has sustained a labral injury in his left shoulder and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.
If they did, I would hope Kerr gives Rollins a strong counsel: emphasize setup and space creation, not scoring, and especially create open shots for Poole, Wigggs, etc. He has to curb his instinct to shoot it when he gets penetration on the big team in a way that G-League play has not required him to do. I'd love for him to develop his currently lacking skills on scoring against NBA-level D, but not now with the team needing wins and development of more experienced players.
Alright, Steve, time to earn your paycheck. If we can stay around .500 until he comes back then we'll be fine but if we get under 10 games or so it'll be a big mountain to climb.
- Poole to show that he is worth his next contract
- Dray and Klay to show that they are the real OGs (besides Steph). We did fine in last few weeks of last RS. But we had OPJ (DDV ~ GP2, JK ~ or > Belli).
Good catch on the nuance there, but I don't think they say "a few" if it's possibly all the way out to 6w. I'd say 2w would be surprising, but anything longer than 4w would also be a bit surprising to me.
Of course, 4w gets us allll the way through the long homestand. At this point, hoping they can still be 0.500 when Steph comes back, and then turn it on after the break. Gonna be 4-5 seed at best, imo...
At this point, I'm happy with 1-3 the rest of this trip and 5-3 on the upcoming homestead... which gets us to 20-21 at the halfway point. Get Steph back and go 26-15 down the stretch, and you're at 46-36 wins which should be good enough for 6 seed, imo.
that would be cutting it close, at .561 win % would currently just miss out on the 6 seed (Clippers at .567)… but also would be not far out of the current 4 seed (Blazers/Suns tied at .571)
every win really matters in the Western standings this year! (which is why all the blown games to start the season are such a problem, now more than ever)
Why is icing an injury still a thing in professional sports? Is it not now well accepted that inflammation is an important part of the healing process and ice shouldn't be applied for more than 5 minutes at a time, if at all?
Swelling can also be because of internal bleeding - there are little blood vessels everywhere and a serious tweak or twist can break them. Cold can help reduce that swelling, which otherwise might cause further injuries.
ice is generally recommended in response to a whole range of injuries (and indeed my understanding is that the medical recommendation has trended toward a *longer* icing period, vs earlier thought of switching to heat after a few days of ice)
Swelling is bad; (acute) inflammation is actually beneficial though as it's a key component of healing/recovery. Icing impedes inflammation and makes recovery take longer; it also mutes muscle gains, and its impact on circulation can actually cause swelling rather than treat it.
Dr. Gabe Mirkin, the guy coined the term 'RICE,' has since recanted and acknowledges that rest and ice are often impediments to healing.
speaking from recent experience with an injury: I had (among other pains) a badly swollen finger with no pain, thought I could go without icing it… and now the rest of the injury is recovered & that finger still hurts! swelling causes further tissue damage
Just listened to the light years podcast interview with Dr Pandaya. He says there are four scenarios. Best case is a stinger which is day to day. Next worse is muscle strain which would be around a 2 week recovery. Next worse is subluxation which Dr says is a partial dislocation where the shoulder starts to pop out, but not fully. Subluxation would be around a month long recovery. Full dislocation would be 8-12 week. They should know severity after MRI.
Pretty interesting article. Basically sayinf poetl will be amongst the most coveted trade acquisition targets leading up to the trade deadline with Toronto the lead horse potentially. Guess we can forget a Poetl-Wiseman trade straight up.
Interesting option that article raises: Houston's going rate for Eric Gordon is a first round pick. That's something we could afford if we decide we want another reliable vet.
He's a bit short for what we need, probably, so the price is probably too high, but he does defend above his size and is a threat from 3 (career 37%, was over 41% last year on 5 attempts/game).
As for other trade targets, I wonder if we could rescue Juanito from LA for a second-rounder. Maybe not worth it but he is a guy who knows the system and plays hard...
Oh dang, I didn't realize Gordon is making $19mil this year with a non-guaranteed $21 next year. Yeah, nevermind. No way we can move enough salary to match that and still consider that a net-positive. (Matching salaries would be like... Wiseman, JMG, Iguodala, PBJ, *and* Rollins.)
Listening to the Dunc'd On podcast last week, they were suggesting that Poeltl's defense—specifically in terms of rim protection—had declined fairly significantly this year. That was news to me, as I've only watched the Spurs once this year. Anyone have any further insight into that? I can see that his blocks are way down, but I don't really know how to contextualize that. The observations on that podcast are really sharp, but occasionally I wonder if they aren't so intricate as to lose a bit of perspective—like parents watching a newborn.
Given that he's 27 and seemingly healthy, you wouldn't necessarily expect any decline to be permanent. But given the cost and the limitations of his role on this team, you'd want to be sure you were getting every bit his reputed defensive prowess.
I posted this during half-time in yesterday's game. Guess, Kerr didn't get it.

Steph Is the only one making the effort and the shots. Kerr should just sit him for the rest of the game to avoid any injury. It looks like a lost cause anyway.

Heyyy... some good news!
Can't wait for: Air Canada cleared for take off
This is why you don't trick off 7 easy games this year.
Was never content with the 'if we just won 3 more games, we'd be 1st place' narrative.
It sucks, but at the same time when you have a #2 pick on the roster who hasn't played, you have to play him. The only way out of that would have been trading him in the offseason.

I'm gonna worry about the team performing well enough in his absence to even be able to hold onto hope to get a 6 seed...

Dammit. Are we really going to go 0-6 in this road trip?
Looks like it.
Via Shams:
Golden State Warriors All-NBA star Stephen Curry has sustained a labral injury in his left shoulder and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.
And in a subsequent tweet he said it's not expected to require surgery so that's good. 👍🏾
That's a very good sign
Not the best news... I think this means cartilage instead of muscle?
at least now, publicly, we can blame our losses on missing Steph?
Welp, but I didn't think we had much of a shot last season either.
If we can get it together for a run next year I won't be too sad, it's a long season and the vets are just getting older.
Sit everyone on a road back to back and rest up, play JK until he fouls out and figure out who to keep for next season.
If anything, if were still in it come Feb it will be interesting to see the growth of the youth movement with the vets when they get back.
Next year as in 3 weeks from now?
No better time to call up Wiseman than now
When Curry missed the last remaining games of last season due to foot injury, here's how the Warriors did:
@ Celtics- loss
vs. Spurs- loss
@ Magic- loss
@ Heat - win
@ Hawks- loss
@ Wizards- loss
@ Grizzlies- loss
vs. Suns- loss
vs. Jazz- win
@ Kings- win (Kings had a depleted roster)
vs. Lakers- win (Lakers were playing their backups)
@ Spurs- win (Spurs were playing their backups)
@ Pelicans- win (Pelicans were resting their starters)
Yikes
And last season's roster was better than the current one
I guess now we wait for Wiggins' re-evaluation today
Also, curious if they call up Rollins now
If they did, I would hope Kerr gives Rollins a strong counsel: emphasize setup and space creation, not scoring, and especially create open shots for Poole, Wigggs, etc. He has to curb his instinct to shoot it when he gets penetration on the big team in a way that G-League play has not required him to do. Woj is saying "a few weeks". Damn Damn Damn 😭
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1603488083688693760?s=46&t=tsgrCkxingGW372YCY-dtQ
A few weeks is GREAT news. Was nervously preparing for much worse.
Could be worse.
That is good news considering what Dr Pandaya said about a partial dislocation being 1 to 2 months recovery.
"A few weeks" feels like it could still be "1 to 2 months" (4-8 weeks).
Anything can be end up being anything but "a few weeks" isn't "one to two months", nobody seriously uses those terms interchangeably.
Welp. Let's hope the rest of the team steps up.
Another o-fer road trip coming up!
Plus side Steph will be more fresh for a deep playoff run and he gets to spend the holidays with family.
Alright, Steve, time to earn your paycheck. If we can stay around .500 until he comes back then we'll be fine but if we get under 10 games or so it'll be a big mountain to climb.
Well time for:
- Poole to show that he is worth his next contract
- Dray and Klay to show that they are the real OGs (besides Steph). We did fine in last few weeks of last RS. But we had OPJ (DDV ~ GP2, JK ~ or > Belli).
- Bob to find someone who can be better than JMG
- Kerr to use Moody the right way.
- Loon to drink copious amounts of F-tAid
- Andre to respond to "break in emergency"
What about Wiggins?
Reading into his words... but since he specifically didn't use "a couple" weeks... I'm thinking 4-6 weeks? Which is 15-20 games. Ugh.
Good catch on the nuance there, but I don't think they say "a few" if it's possibly all the way out to 6w. I'd say 2w would be surprising, but anything longer than 4w would also be a bit surprising to me.

to be clear you're hoping they are better without steph than with steph.
they are <.500 with him.
treading water at .500 without Steph would be pretty surprising with how this team has played so far this year
At this point, I'm happy with 1-3 the rest of this trip and 5-3 on the upcoming homestead... which gets us to 20-21 at the halfway point. Get Steph back and go 26-15 down the stretch, and you're at 46-36 wins which should be good enough for 6 seed, imo.

Agreed. I'm setting myself up to avoid disappointment :P

interesting read tho
sore muscles are very very different from a soft tissue injury!

No news about Curry's injury ☹️. It's already afternoon in Indiana. I keep checking internet every 15 min.
Out for at least the next 2 weeks looks like
They will wait as long as they can…
I posted this during half-time in yesterday's game. Guess, Kerr didn't get it.

We would have won the game if Steph didn't get hurt. So your "lost cause" call was, in fact, not correct.
