I wonder if Podz has built a reputation of really selling that moving screen. NGL he flops pretty hard on some of them

It doesn't matter how little you care about baseball or how much. Or how little you like the Dodgers or how much: Shohei Ohtani just hit three homers and pitched six shutout innings in the same game, to send his team to the World Series.

That's probably best game ever played by a player in that sport. He's pretty much optimized the sport.

Yeah not even close. In the last 5 years maybe and I thought baseball forbid pitchers picking up the bat anymore.

Don't discount bumgarner in 14. That was as close to a one man show all the to the chip as I've seen in baseball.

I mean yeah but him and Ohtani not in the same stratosphere. What we are witnessing now is unprecedented.

Yes, but I can't help thinking it seems a little odd (or off) .

I did not watch, and have not been watching the baseball playoffs this year....

Historically feats like this have never been done, nor attempted I don't think.

Sports dynamics change over the years and players evolve as athletes.

Ohtani is obviously a great baseball player, and has been for many years. This is not a freak!

We'll never know how he would/could have performed in past seasons of the long history of American Major League baseball. This is how sports history debate florishes.

Yeah the pitching puts it over the top. The other candidate would be the game vs Miami in September last season when he went 6-for-6, with 3 HR, 2 doubles, 4 runs, 10 RBIs, and became the first player ever to hit 50 HRs and steal 50 bases in the same season.

Asher B.'s avatar

That was a phenomenal game, too, but it was in an inconsequential game and he didn't pitch. The pitching puts it over the top.

Clips look they got a good one with Kobe Sanders. Their other bench players looked well organized too. They're deep.

He's better than Podz imo

I wouldn't go that far. Podz is actually younger and is a 37% 3pt shooter in the NBA whereas Kobe Sanders shot 33% in college. Sanders just had a good game and Podz had a bad one.

And... Fitz with the unavoidable lacrosse mention.

FooBar's avatar

I actually like Fitz and Kelenna.

I live overseas and watch nba using the league pass....which is quite cheap here. I sometimes choose the opposing teams stream and listen to their commentators.

I can tell you that Fitz and Kelenna are as good as they come.

Are they annoying at times? Are they homers? Yes and Yes.

But man, there are some real bad commentary teams out there.

Specifically about the lacrosse mention:

There are many occasional watchers of the warriors. So Fitz has to balance out the needs of diehards with those of the new comers also.

And also he has to fill time with something

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

I think Kelenna has gotten better every year, and I like him. He had a tough act to follow in Jim Barnett, who many of us loved, but he does a good job.

Basically, I agree Fitz and 'Buke are one of the better broadcast teams, even if Fitz is annoying at times. His biggest weakness is his suck-up interviews, which are second-rate at best, in my opinion. He's best when actually calling the game, and there he is very good.

Fitz also has baggage with some of us old-timers from the old days (pre-Lacob) when he was a shill for a bad management group. I am not suggesting he should have bad-mouthed his bosses, just that he went too far the other way. But that was a long time ago.

Fitz also has improved in other respects since then. At least we don't have to hear about Notre Dame U. (his alma mater) every game anymore.

Regarding the lacrosse mention, that's not just about Fitz. Every broadcaster mentions it in every game where Spencer plays, and you'll see a few of us here call that out. It's not relevant to the game; it's fluff. If you were once a graphic artist, and now you're playing in the NBA, and all they ever say about you is how you were a graphic artist, rather than talking about your playing career, style, and development, is that really good broadcasting? I think not. It's not a lack of filler, it's a knee-jerk thing that the broadcasters always mention lacrosse. Every. Damn. Game.

FooBar's avatar

Good points overall. Ack.

Re: Lacrosse: It is something really unique to see an individual excel at the highest level in 2 sports. So not just a graphic artist becoming an NBA player. Two sports, and he is excellent at both.

It is boring to hear that from everyone commentator every game. It doesn't annoy me as much. But I can understand the longer term baggage

It may just be pre-season but it is more than a little concerning that after all the changes, the Warriors still don't have a reliable 2nd scoring option after Curry. A healthy Butler would obviously help but the Clippers aren't exactly rolling out their A-team either.

Expand full comment
stickdog's avatar

The second scoring option is Butler. Until the roster changes and/or Melton returns to form, the third most reliable scoring options are Kuminga and/or Moody. Both were out last night.

But the point is well-taken that the Warriors cannot count on any players other than Curry or Butler to be reliable scoring options on any given night.

Expand full comment
AJ's avatar

Um, yeah, the 2nd option is Butler. Don't take a preseason game too seriously.

Expand full comment
JZAlvarado's avatar

I mean pre and post-KD when did they really have a reliable and consistent second scoring option? Thats really what made that team the 2025 LA Dodgers (apparently). Aside from that youve got the ultimate neutron bomb in Steph with a sprinkling of everyone else at any given time.

Did you think any of the new guys would be that? Those guys aren’t growing on trees and cost more than the Warriors have available.

What they do have is Wardell “my team is PLUS TWENTY FIVE points per 100 possessions at the rim when I’m on the floor” Stephen Curry.
