[Grange] Atlanta has been tied to Siakam for weeks and tried to re-engage the Raptors after the VanVleet news broke. Several other teams are believed to have checked in also. O.G. Anunoby — the smooth-shooting, all-NBA defender remains on the watch list for several teams, the Knicks especially.
Raptors were ready to increase their initial three-year, $90-million offer to include a partially guaranteed fourth year that would have brought the total guarantee to $100 million — a nice, round figure that was an important threshold for the formerly undrafted guard.
The Raptors felt they might still be in consideration if the Rockets were offering two years at $83 million, but when they went to three years and $130 million, there was no counter-offer
It was a remarkable confluence of events for VanVleet, who at times regretted not taking the full four-year, $114-million extension the Raptors were prepared to offer before the season as he struggled alongside the team. Toronto was in a tricky position at the trade deadline — moving VanVleet for a relatively paltry return (the Clippers were offering a package centred on Luke Kennard) would have been a tough sell locally and trading him somewhere he wouldn’t want to re-sign would have hurt his market value too.
Siakam turned down a three-year max extension at the beginning of last season in the hopes that he would qualify for his third all-NBA team and thus become eligible for a 'super max' extension worth 35 per cent of the salary cap.
Sources have described a team where the veterans — VanVleet and Siakam especially — were deeply frustrated with the younger players on the roster and VanVleet let them know about it, something the younger set didn’t appreciate at all. Nurse wasn’t able to bridge the divide as key players kept getting hurt and open three after open three drew only iron.
…
Ujiri had to address the team personally and second-year star Scottie Barnes specifically. It was the first of a number of times that Ujiri felt the need to make his feelings known about the way the team was playing and individuals were performing.
He did it again in the weeks before the February trade deadline, laying into the team for selfish play and poor body language. The message: straighten up or be shipped out.
Things were tense enough that Nurse was planning his exit even then, believing he would be fired. He may well have welcomed it.
With no apology to JZAlvarado, just sign Papagiannis (and don't trade away our young talent or GP2) and then sign Saric or Derrick Jones Jr. and call it a day!

Yall are too enamored with sexy names and highlight reels. Derrick Jones would be a disaster on this team. But listen if we can get Javale back somehow, even if we don’t sign Daric, this will bode a much better offseason than last years. Javale and CJ would be two really solid pickups
Think you might have missed a little bit of satire, there.
I am in favor getting JaVale back. What's that? he's under contract to another team. Whatever. What else? He's a lot older and may not be as good as he was? bah, humbug!
Jason Timpf’s new video has quick looks at four games. Warriors at 13:38. He had REALLY nice things to say about Podz offense and how well it fits at GSW, especially his passing. Said he will be a better offensive player in his rookie season than DDV was this past season. (Goofus note: “Wha??!!”) Defense will be the big question https://youtu.be/DBZa-p-3G38
Great listen. Warriors part was only like 3 minutes
The Saric news before FA started was probably a double edged sword — we called dibs on Saric, but that probably also prevents other 4/5’s from seriously considering us.
Our cap restrictions are what is keeping everyone from seriously considering us. They all want to see if they can get more than a vet min before settling on one
That and we are only offering one-year deals. Some teams are offering two-year deals with the second year being a player option. But the league taxes two-year vet min deals at the full rate, and one-year vet min deals are partly subsidized, so with tax, those two-year deals cost team over the cap (like us) a lot more. Plus if we are going to offer a player option year, we need to be very confident that a player is going to work out (especially aging players, such as Eric Gordon).
Hmmm. Georgios Papagiannis turned 26 yesterday, he was a 2016 #13 pick. He's listed as 7' 2 3/4" with a 7'6" wingspan. Didn't play much his two years with the Kings but he was 19 yrs old as a rookie so he will have matured since. However his Euroleague and Greek League numbers don't look impressive. I don't know if that is meaningful when considering his NBA potential. I bet Dino would know more about him. BTW he is Greek, not Turkish. Big difference.
My only memory of Papa G was Dave Joerger yelling at him to 'get on the floor' in a preseason game, when he failed to dive for a loose ball (I was in Stockton at the time, and watched a bunch of the Kings).
He was a relatively slow center. Unless that has improved dramatically, I would pass.
Giannis Bourousis would have been Jokic before Jokic if NBA execs had listened to Dino!!! (Seriously, I get the sense he actually would have been really good in the NBA, if not quite Jokic).

Had heard the Magic were looking at dealing Bol Bol dating back to the NBA Draft. Two teams mentioned were Phoenix and Dallas, but the Suns have flushed out their veteran minimum centers. Wonder if Bol could be in the Mavericks’ plans if Dallas can find a deal for JaVale McGee.
can someone help me out with a box score puzzle? there are a total of 73 missed field goals between the two teams, but only 46 total rebounds recorded… what happened to the other 27 missed shots?? were that many of them really just flying out of bounds?
Just a random guess, but is it possible you're adding up individual rebounds, but excluding team rebounds (such as on plays where a foul occurs before the rebound is secured)?
Centers that are still free agents Christian Wood, Mo Bamba, Bol Bol, Bismack Biyombo, Blake Griffin, Montrezl Harrell, Frank Kaminsky, Willy Hernangomez, and Omer Yurtseven.
Am I crazy to think that most of these guys would be pretty reasonable C's for us? Wood was on my wishlist a couple seasons back before he got way over the minimum; how did his value drop so much since then?
Hernangomez and Yurtseven have shined for moments too; feels like they would be worth a shot alongside our guys.
And I really liked Montrezl Harrell's two-man game with Lou Williams back when they were both on the Clippers; it was never the same after they got split apart. But I wonder if the Dubs have a guard who could unlock Montrezl's game. And yeah, he had kind of a "fraud detected" moment in the playoffs a couple seasons back, but we are mostly looking for a regular season big anyway.
We probably don't need Bol Bol but that could be fun, too. Sons of NBA players have worked out for us so far; why not another?
I’m talking myself into being intrigued by Mo Bamba, partly out of emotional self-preservation in event we don’t get Saric. Last few days I’ve had all my emotional eggs in the Saric basket to a degree that isn’t healthy.
Heck, even if we get Saric, I’m intrigued by Bamba. He’s not useless as a shooter and passer, and his 7’-10” wingspan (!!!) offsets the stubbiness of CP3, CoJo, and Podz. Go big or go home! I was thinking we needed to add one more versatile wing for lineup flexibility, but I’m basically fine with Wiggs, Klay, Kuminga and Moody covering all the versatile wing minutes. Throw in Big Tony if necessary.
The Lakers might try to re-sign Bamba. He was set to make $10.3M, non-guaranteed, when he was waived, but they supposedly still want to sign another big, and they still have a couple of roster spots. They could offer him a bit more than the vet min to get him back at a much lower salary while keeping him out of reach of scavengers like us.
Montrezl next to Draymond would be interesting... of course the spacing is terrible, but the intensity would be off the charts, and he somehow has the standing reach and bulk of a true center despite being 6'7"
I feel like the mob might show up to my house after suggesting this but.... would Dwight Howard be a good LAST RESORT option for that role of a regular season big? I feel like he would fit well with CP3.
His skillet sorta fits a need but I think it’s more of a locker room/Steve Kerr wouldn’t like him thing. He doesn’t bring the right mentality… somewhat similar to Cousins (except ‘not serious’ vs ‘scary volatile’). The way the latter played in 2022 playoffs, there’s no reason that guy shouldn’t be on an NBA roster. Speaks to how great his off court negatives are.
His attitude seemed a lot better in his last stint with LAL. I think he has been humbled since his glory days. I was thinking about him as a last resort too, although he is almost 38. He played in Taiwan last season, I believe, so he probably is in decent shape.
I'm the mob. I'm posting from inside your house. Having the most annoying Clipper is bad enough. [Even if it might work out OK.] But we [I] don't want more of them.

Hawks seem like a bit of a mess. One minute they're scrambling to dodge the tax, the next minute they're trading for Siakam?
Also kind of seeming like a mess (and far more surprisingly): The Raptors.

You know, the Saric thing has never been more than a rumor reported by the media. We have not called dibs on anybody.
Honestly, why would he take a vet min? Will Bol Bol take a vet min? I strongly doubt it. I think Jay Huff is still available.
Nah thats common of teams. Right now its these two trades holding potential moves back.
So that's why Wemby wasn't playing last night.
[Stein] The Spurs’ current plan is indeed for Victor Wembanyama to make his San Antonio debut Friday night in Las Vegas against Charlotte.
But why? Because they want him to showcase in LV?
He finished playing in the Finals not too long ago so the spurs are giving him additional rest before making his debut.
Yeah, that’s what I thought, too. Nothing in this tweet sheds new light, tho.
I read on reddit that Papagiannis 7"2 center from Turkey that can shoot 3s now is eyeing to return to the NBA and currently working out in San fran
Channeling Dino: I’m gonna go ahead and guess that a dude named Georgios Papagiannis is originally from Greece, not Turkey. 😊
(Edit: whoops, already noted!)
Hmmm. Georgios Papagiannis turned 26 yesterday, he was a 2016 #13 pick. He's listed as 7' 2 3/4" with a 7'6" wingspan. One of Dino's favs.
Washed out in Sac. Terrible draft pick by Vlade.
The Papa G highlights below are worth a look. He now seems to be reasonably mobile.
Fortunately, I'm sure the Dubs will work him out, if they haven't already. If he really is serviceable, they'll know.
One of many by Vlade lol. Shoutout Harry Giles Jr.
Recent video of him I think, to see how he moves/shoots. https://youtu.be/ev-Z4XumzWA
I think we need that guy.
Definitely sign him!
With no apology to JZAlvarado, just sign Papagiannis (and don't trade away our young talent or GP2) and then sign Saric or Derrick Jones Jr. and call it a day!
Just trade Steph, Wiggins, Kuminga, and Moody for Fred Van Vleet, Dillon Brooks, and Jeff Green and call it a day!
Holy shit! Bogut-light with a long ball?!
Get Saric AND him and call it a day!
Ok, calm down Goofus.
But seriously, he looks like an athlete who does a lot of different things.
Although how good was that competition?
Isn’t Euroleague pretty high level? 🤷🏼♂️
That looks way better than I remember .. but my memory is not that trustworthy.
Is he Giannis’s dad?
I am pretty sure he owns the Papagiannis pizza chain. In fact there's one on Sutter in SF. A bit of a walk from Chase Ctr though.
More coaching news:
[Wojnarowski] Veteran assistant Bryan Gates has agreed to join Jason Kidd’s coaching staff with the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell ESPN. Gates spent the past two seasons with Monty Williams and the Suns.
Warriors: we need a big man
Meanwhile in Dallas:
Rishaun Holmes
Dwight Powell
Maxi Klieber
Derrick Lively II
Javale Mcgee
1/5 for spelling, though admittedly Dereck Lively II spells his name bizarrely. 😊
I’m driving so this is what my shatty iphone voice recognition is picking up
My phone would never get those names right. Seems like your phone is not really so shanty!
I’ve typed those names out enough that the software picks it up correctly for the most part except Derek
And Richaun Holmes, another odd spelling.
Haha, that’s commitment. Eyes on the road!
Thank god for shoulder strips. I went from Missouri to west Texas and back in a span of 4 daya
And if they’re releasing Mcgee, they’ll just swap him for another big man

Per Woj the Magic waived Bol Bol. The Woj report is Twitter but I got it from a secondary source from a Mavs viewpoint (speculating the same thing, whether they might deal JaVale and sign Bol). https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nba/magic-cut-bol-bol-mavs-sign-after-javale-mcgee-trade/ar-AA1dqOgE
If they release JaVale, make that call, DunDun!
Absolutely. Thatd be the best remaining alternative IMO
can someone help me out with a box score puzzle? there are a total of 73 missed field goals between the two teams, but only 46 total rebounds recorded… what happened to the other 27 missed shots?? were that many of them really just flying out of bounds?
Blocked shots count as a missed FG with no corresponding rebound.
Just a random guess, but is it possible you're adding up individual rebounds, but excluding team rebounds (such as on plays where a foul occurs before the rebound is secured)?
no, I was looking at team totals, but I was looking only at defensive rebounds
counting the O boards, it's 62 total rebounds to 73 missed field goals
This is likely. Team rebounds also occur when a shot goes out of bounds, which happens frequently enough.
IIRC, team rebounds also accrue when there's a dead-ball missed free throw (i.e. missed first of two free throws).
Interesting! It never occurred to me that would count as a rebound. Learn something new every day — several new things around DNHQ.
