Game 19: GSW vs LA Clippers. Coach Ron Adams on working with Chris Paul. Plus open thread.
GSW, down a hall of famer, takes on four hall of famers
Update
Andrew Wiggins is out tonight against the Clippers. Right finger soreness. So the Warriors will be without Wiggins, Chris Paul and Gary Payton II.
Inspirational verse from Ron Adams, KNBR 680AM⧸104.5FM (11⧸7⧸23) on Chris Paul
Can I ask the big picture question on Chris Paul. From the day that trade happened, Warriors fans were shocked. Not just Jordan Poole who helped win a championship out the door, but in with this villain, and how can you get older and smaller, right? And, and so your reaction to Chris Paul, since you've met him with the Warriors and then all the way up through last night's game?
Well I'd have to say it's been a real pleasure to be around him. He's a really unique human being. I have never been around anyone more focused on being successful than he is. It's just incredible.
On the floor, you know, we all have different gifts and there's different fundamentals in basketball, some of which we do not speak of. For example, being a good runner. and these other kind of more nuanced traits. But being able to focus and stay locked in all the time is a wonderful fundamental to have as a player in any sport. And Chris just exemplifies this. It's just really amazing to watch him.
He is a wonderful person to be around in terms of he loves basketball. He can't pass up a group of coaches or players and not sit around and talk about the game. It's just really amazing.
And I think he's been great with our young guys. He's a great coach on the floor, obviously. I think for an older player, I think his defense has held up well. And last night, he shot the ball well. He's been a very good scorer over the course of time in our league. He was not looking to shoot too much in many of our games this year, but last night, his shot looked good. He got a lot of great spin on the ball when he was shooting. He was balanced and was really a timely scorer for us.
So many things have fallen into place with him, but he's just been a real asset for us, but not only on the court, but just as a human being, just being around him and the team relating to him and so on.
[Chris Paul’s] decision to accept his bench role without causing a fuss. Can you speak to maybe how the human element of that has played out?
Chris is a competitor. I'm sure if he had his choice, he would like to start, as would about five other guys in our team, right? But I think Chris takes a very long view on things and he's coming off the bench now and doing a marvelous job with the second unit, but he's playing with the first unit at key times in the game. So basically when you're a winner like him, you're playing. You're playing the game, doing something you love to do and making a difference. And I think that's probably how he looks at it at this point in his career.
As we age comes wisdom. We should gain wisdom, I might say. And I think that's very much a part of his makeup at this point.
