At 2:34 in the video there's a defensive possession with Loon at the top of the 3-2 zone and Poole at one of the low spots. Do you think that was intentional because Plumlee was at the top? Or was it just early offense scrambling that got everyone out of position?

I think that was a scramble because you definitely don’t want Poole in the back line of a zone defense

I think Divencenzo’s raised arms wasn’t a premature ejubulation, but rather him trying to look big because he thought Poole was a mountain lion.

That or he thought the nearest defender was a mountain lion.

Gonna push back couch and try that no-look, turnaround, premature 3-pt-celebration myself next game. F-ing Next Level Moses. Are we sure he isn’t lurking here and watching these? LOL

That would be hilarious. Moses reading the blog and trying to figure out how to get featured on E1P. Since he's had few in-game minutes, he realizes he's going to have to up his celebration game...

Kudos for highlighting the 3-2 defense after the box-and-1. Timpf mentioned that the Dubs' played a lot of 3-2 against POR and didn't mention the box-and-1 at all, so it was great to get a good look at the 3-2.

We need a higher frame-rate for the JK era. I need more slo-mo frames to shout: "No way, he's not gonna.... wow!!". I guess we have to work with whatever gets streamed to the Apricot Temple of Syrinx. Anyone here tried "Frame Interpolation" tools? Or maybe the drama is all the more compelling in flashes anyway!

My stream is pretty crap too... I've never found a way to get a really high quality video capture (and gladly would take suggestions). Basically screen capturing my browser stream right now.

So you don't watch on a TV, right? Because if you did, an analog video capture card/cable ($20) could record your TV's settop (cable) box analog audio and video outputs to USB, and you can record glitch-free to any video software. It's actually pretty easy.

Are the clips from nba.com’s play-by-play (next to the box score tab) better quality and captuable?

Yes, I can download them but

1. They often begin mid-play so you miss a lot of the most interesting stuff

2. They aren’t available for a couple of hours after the game and I try to bang these out soon after the game ends.

3. They omit celebrations

So yes, I sometimes use them in a pinch, but it’s a second-rate solution

Well that settles that, then. Celebration audit is mandatory.

They tend to be too short, IMO.

Are they switching to zone without calling a timeouts again? Jason Kidd said that was one remarkable thing the Dubs were doing in the series with the Mavericks last year.

So far this year it seems to me the defense switches come at time stoppages

Expand full comment

After last game, I heard a player [?] - maybe Donte - comment that the defensive switches were in the game plan to change after certain things happened in the previous plays. That way they didn't have to wait for time outs or stoppages, so they could keep switching the D & the Blazers couldn't get used to any one defense for very long.

From Dalton Johnson:

"Poole scored a game-high 34 points, going 9 of 20 from the field and 5 of 12 on 3-pointers in the Warriors' win. Nobody short of a fortune teller could have foreseen those kind of final numbers from the electric guard."

Well, either a fortune teller or DNHQ commenter TwoRingTest, who was on record before the game with the statement:

"I just have this weird hunch that Poole is going to have a good game."

Good prognosticating there!

Indeed. And Dalton's comment seems kind of inane, since of course no can foresee specific numbers. Even in more general terms, tho, 30+ points on high efficiency is not unheard of for JP. Did Johnson mean no one could have predicted those numbers *after JP's cruddy first half*? Doesn't make much sense otherwise.

Yea - he is sometimes an incomplete thought writer. He knows what he means but often needs to spell it out. Or got ahead of himself and forgot to write it.

Yes, I took his quote out of context, the full quote was "...Not with the way Poole started the game." Dalton doesn't always make sense, but this case wasn't as bad as it looked from my selective editing.

I am in a disgustingly good mood this morning. Part of it is waking up to find out that I am a citizen of the Republic of Looney Looney.

Just got my passport, which is in the shape of a rubber duck.

Expand full comment

I often think about how the rest of the league has underappreciated his value twice now in free agency, which is the only reason he is still a Warrior. As much as I would have hated to see him leave, it is a bit crappy that he is making less than dudes like Plumlee, Poeltl, and Richaun Holmes.

Expand full comment

Steph had the right attitude on this after his 4-year, $44M contract looked so woefully undervalued - to paraphrase, "...more money than pop's made in 16 years" Looney's getting $7.5M/year to play basketball. Even in California, that is enough to pay taxes, buy a 2 bedroom, one bathroom house and go out to dinner once a month.

OTOH, you are correct. It's too bad Looney can't make more than some of these other guys that he is superior to.

Bunch of internecine Western Conference battles tonight: NO@GS, LAC@SAC, MEM@DEN, UTA@OKC, MIN@LAL.

A Ws win would guarantee we gain ground on at least four teams (or five, if Portland falls to Atlanta).

My random stat of the day: we're 21-15 in conference this year; that's right, a 58% winning percentage! That still only puts us in 6th place, with Denver and Sacramento looking dominant against Western Conference foes and multiple teams in a jumble in the 56-59% range. The big loser here is Memphis, which is 8th instead of 2nd as they are in the full standings, and the LA Clippers who are 11th and one of only five teams in the West that are below 0.500 against Western Conference opponents:

Team Wins Losses Total WinPct

Denver 31 12 43 72%

Sacramento 24 13 37 65%

Phoenix 22 15 37 59%

Dallas 24 17 41 59%

Golden State 21 15 36 58%

New Orleans 20 15 35 57%

Memphis 20 16 36 56%

Minnesota 23 20 43 53%

Utah 21 19 40 53%

Portland 21 19 40 53%

LA Clippers 19 20 39 49%

LA Lakers 17 21 38 45%

Oklahoma City 15 22 37 41%

Houston 7 35 42 17%

San Antonio 6 32 38 16%

Looking at these Western Conference standings, the Phoenix-Dallas-Golden State grouping is very interesting, as all of those teams have added new talent from the breakup of Brooklyn (Phoenix+KD and Dallas+Kyrie) or will be getting back their best player (Golden State+Steph; plus Wiggins and hopefully GP2 at some point). Getting home court over Phoenix and Dallas would be really beneficial (yeah, that's a "no duh" kind of conclusion, but I think this helps highlight that).

My what a difference a week makes.

Last week, we're scheming to stay in the play-in, this week, we're trying to figure out who we need to beat to get home court. Such a weird year.

I'd probably put Sacramento in that grouping. They're only three games ahead of Phoenix, and have the worst defense and least elite talent of the four teams.

One potential scenario I'd be cool with: Phoenix #3, GS #4, Sacramento #5, Dallas #6.

We'd get Sacramento in the first round, Denver (probably) in the second, and not have to face KD/Booker, Luka/Kyrie, or the dirty, injury-creating Grizzlies till the WCF.

Expand full comment

If there's any way to face Kings/Memphis instead of Suns/Nuggets I'd take that even if it means the 6th spot.

Sacramento also has either the toughest or one of the toughest remaining schedules, for what it's worth. But it's hard to root against Light the Beam!

Expand full comment

This helps offset their 3-game lead, so yah, they probably belong in this grouping. Without the schedule strength affect, though, a 3-game lead with <20 games left prolly is pretty safe.

I'm curious what you finally got. Looked more like a 1-2-2 zone to me, but I guess if the top two are really wide, it might be more properly called a 3 - 2.

Expand full comment

It's essentially the same thing, so...semantics. This is the main D that I had my girls' teams run, and I always called it a 1-2-2, cause I think it helped them visualize the responsibilities better (or maybe that was me). Anyhow, we always had the best D in the league.

By any chance did you also have the best players in the league? That is the strategy that works best for me in high school ... ;p

No. Unfortunately the Christian school had a program and players that had been together for a long time, and they were better. But they scored less than half their average against us, but usually still beat us by a few points.

I am all in favor of great defense consisting of a good scheme, player buy in and hard work, but I highly recommend getting the best players, too! :)

I know it is early but I have got to take umbrage with calling Westbrook an open "shooter". I would have accepted open man or open player but open shooter is just a brick too far.

Happy to see that lately celebrators just keep celebrating. Don't know if it's the addition of GP2 or if the league finally sent the email that they are not enforcing the celebratory bench tech anymore but the weaponized joy seems like it may be finally reappearing on the bench.
