In football, reference is routinely made to "the secondary," meaning the cornerbacks and safeties. "The secondary has been containing the deep passes well."
But I've never once heard reference to "the primary." I looked it up and as expected, the defensive line is the primary. But no one ever ever says so. Why?
Courtesy of ChatGPT. This actually made sense to me.
In football, the terminology of "primary" and "secondary" derives from the roles and positioning of players in relation to the line of scrimmage and their responsibilities on the field.
1. Primary (Defensive Line):
- The defensive line is considered the first line of defense. These players line up closest to the line of scrimmage and engage the offensive line. Their primary job is to:
-- Stop the run by tackling the ball carrier close to the line of scrimmage.
-- Pressure the quarterback to disrupt passing plays (e.g., by sacking the quarterback or forcing hurried throws).
- Because they are the initial defense that offensive players encounter, they are often seen as the primary defense.
2. Secondary (Defensive Backfield):
- The secondary consists of defensive backs (cornerbacks and safeties) who line up farther back from the line of scrimmage. Their job is:
-- Defend against passes by covering receivers and preventing completions.
-- Provide deep support to prevent big plays, such as long passes or breakaway runs.
- Since they come into play after the defensive line and linebackers, they are referred to as the secondary line of defense.
In essence, the "primary" and "secondary" labels reflect the sequence in which these groups are expected to engage with the offensive play. The line handles the immediate threats near the line of scrimmage, while the secondary protects against deeper or more advanced plays.
The next 4 games should tell the story of where the Dubs are going, up or down. All of our opponents, some good ones, are bordering the .500 mark and all are teams we have to beat to stay above the Play-In status. Plus, we've got a rising Spurs team with a new coach(interim) that has given the team a real boost. I like Pop, but he's old, not useless, though. Many teams struggling to keep their heads above water like Phoenix. The Dubs have a chance because of Steph and the kind of mentality that he brings. The come back energy is still alive and cannot be ignored late in games. This is a must have element in the West. Will Schroder still start with Steph? I really hope not. If they want to go small, GP2 can start and boost the D. I still want to see Steph/GP2/Wiggs/JK/TJD start games with Schroder leading the bench. Schroder/Podz/Waters/KA/Draymond with Hield and Looney inserted when necessary for scoring and D. This lines up to a 12 man rotation which was what we were running at the beginning of the season.
Agree, with the exception of DRAY...he needs to be in there with STEPH/BUDDY/WIGS...at least we need try it, settle the offenses issues...GP2 and small ball defense will always be available...
If the league keeps on hiring incompetent officials making highly questionable calls throughout the game, then the NBA is going to continue losing fans and views.
The officiating around the league seems to have gotten really strange -- players getting techs for looking at someone or clapping their hands. Not really sure what that is about.
Man, you've got to feel for the PELS. Seems they are jinxed with the injury plague for years. Tonight, with their best players out, those kids put up one heck of a fight and lost to the NUGGETS in OT...
Obviously lols, just that players often get a heads up when a trade is in its finalizing stages and often, we learn/receive hints about it on social media before its fully triggered.
Its entirely possible that I'm wrong, but pairing this with reports from Brett Siegel that the Warriors have been ramping up activity in the trade market while being more open to bandying about Kuminga makes it more likely imho.
Nothing certain, but what we do have is imho pointing in that direction.
He bet on himself, and is posting a 50.6% True Shooting percentage, a career worsts in FT%, REB%, and generally not being nearly as impactful as he was last season. He turned down what was probably a $90M/3 year contract and put a lot of pressure on himself to succeed, and he's just not. He's right to be seeking guidance/support for navigating this difficult situation.
I've heard of a number of players watching their highlight videos to remind themselves how good they are. The highlights package could easily be something similar.
Lol I do not think anyone except Wiggs, is being as impactful as they were last season, and, that was a sorry-arse, aberrant, season. Methinks it may be too early to count anyone out till the roles are better defined. Lots of people gave up on PODZ, also, but he is going to be fine I think; maybe not as fast as some folks thought...Hopefully, this season, ''experimentation'' won't last 3/4 season; not easy for young guys to be jerked in and out of rotations and roles...tough enough for vets. Albeit, a lot of the endless experimentation last season was in response to injuries, personal issues, disciplinary action, and...aprons-avoidance.
Totally fair alternate interpretation of his actions regarding those hints, its just the fact that its being used in conjunction with the ✌️ sign has me choosing the goodbye interpretation. Of course, there is a good chance im totally and utterly wrong!
I would wish Kuminga well but would be happy with him gone, I never was a fan of his style of play even if I've defended him against some detractors on this site. He's just not my TYPE of player with his lack of passing/shooting/lacking the valuable rim protection I value in a PF.
Both interpretations are fair. I hope we are not quitting on JK, or, MOODY, or, PODZ; the last, being the reason for getting DS, as PODZ was not growing fast enough. All, without even trying BUDDY at SG...KERR is really knucklehead-puzzling sometimes...He didn't say a kind word about BUDDY after the win at post-game, though BUDDY hit some critical shots at key times that kept our momentum going; shoo, he's still at 45% FG/42% 3pt shooting/61.3% TS, 21.2 POINTS PER 36, in limited 23 mins PT, bouncing in and out of rotations that underutilize him...whatever
Pacers trampled all over the Kings tonight; they shot the ball 58% overall and 44% beyond the arc, while the Kings shot a miserable 37% overall and 32% beyond the arc.
A couple moments in crunch time: GPII’s screen on Curry’s second 3, and the foul by McDaniels at half court. Not saying either one was a bad call (or non-call in the case of the screen), but we’ve definitely had nights where they both go the other way.
Not sure what my point is, really, except that there’s sometimes a fine line between its being your night or its being the opponent’s.
That McDaniels foul at half court was really important. Steph was just about to be called for the eight second violation before getting fouled, as he was still 5 feet from the half court line
>>>One potential trade iteration to surface … is a swap that would bring LaVine and Torrey Craig to the Nuggets in exchange for Michael Porter Jr. and Zeke Nnaji. Yet the Bulls, league sources say, have balked at Nnaji's inclusion in such a trade.
The rising belief leaguewide is that the Wizards are eager to find a trade partner for Kuzma at some point during the next six-plus weeks ... and that Kuzma would want to depart this time with the 4-22 Wizards scarcely even trying to be competitive heading into the loaded 2025 NBA Draft.<<<

Looking the biggest issues the Warriors have faced since the wheels started to fall 12 games ago is that their team defensive rating has dropped to 114.7, which is 20th in the NBA over that stretch, while the team's offensive ratings have dropped to 106.8, which is 25th in the NBA over that stretch.
The worst team net ratings with each player on the court over the last 12 games:
-42.1 Schroder
-16.2 Moody
-13.4 Slomo
-9.6 Wiggins
-9.4 Waters
-9.3 TJD
-8.7 Green
-7.6 Podz
-6.7 GPII
-6.1 Looney
-5.1 Kuminga
-4.5 Hield
-3.6 Spencer
-1.7 Curry
Interestingly, here are the worst team defensive ratings with each player on the court over the last 12 games:
121.7 Schroder
118.8 Moody
118.7 Curry
116.0 TJD
115.9 Wiggins
115.5 Green
115.1 Waters
114.4 Kuminga
111.7 GPII
109.5 Slomo
109.4 Looney
107.0 Podz
105.7 Hield
93.4 Spencer
Who here had Hield emerging as one of the Warriors' best team defenders and Draymond with a 115+ rating? Note that for the entire season now, the Warriors have a 111.7 defensive rating with Green on the floor, which is the worst on the team among all players with more than 50 minutes of playing time. Other than Spencer and Melton, the Warriors have their best defense ratings over this entire season to date with Slomo (102.7), Hield (103.2), Looney and Podz (both 104.4) on the court.
So, this is one of those stats I'd really like to see the 50 pt outlier removed from the data set. There's a reasonable statistical argument to just call it an outlier and ignore it.
10 points, 45% Field goal, 38% three-point, 86% free throw, 56.6 true shooting,10 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.0 steals in 25.7 minutes per game.
Most impressively, only 1 fouls and 0.9 turnovers per game with a 4.0 assist to turnover ratio. And the Warriors were a combined -21 in during his 25.7 minutes per games over the last 11 games vs. -58 during the 22.3 minutes per game that he was off the court. This is due primarily to the Warriors' 106.2 defensive rating with him on the floor, which is the best on the team over the past 11 games. The Warriors' offensive rating with him on the floor during this stretch is just 100.8, which is pretty dismal. and above just Slomo among players who have played more than 50 minutes.
Here are the NBA's Player impact estimates over the Warriors' last 11 games:

Sure but why does no one ever say "primary"?
Because defensive line is a more descriptive and easier phrase to intuit?
I think of myself as the 77th-er in the DubNationHQ line of defense.

Nothing's better than Xmas time for tales.

I'm glad the ref rescinded the tech, but the fact that Podz got a tech for telling the ref that a drink was spilled on the court still infuriates me.
