Explain One Play: how Gary Payton II gets massive dunks using the JaVale McGee playbook

A list of all Explain One Play articles and videos is at The new Explain One Play index.

I’m trying an experiment where I am taking requests for plays to analyze on video. The link is http://tinyurl.com/AskApricot.

For the 2021.11.10.MIN-GSW game, I got quite a few requests to look at Gary Payton II thunderous dunks in the second period. So we’ll have a look at that stretch of play.

Some of the plays come from inspiration, some from strategy. But I wanted to dig into the background for a play the Warriors have run a few times for a GP2 dunk which dates back to the 2016 days with JaVale McGee.

Co-starring Stephen Curry as creator of unnecessary thrills; Andre Iguodala as defensive wizard, ambitious passer and angel investor; Draymond Green as relay machine; Nemanja Bjelica and Otto Porter Jr. as zone busters; Jordan Poole as a gentleman hype man; Juan Toscano-Anderson as a high flying hype man; and Klay Thompson as a connoisseur of Andre’s scoop lobs.

Great stuff.

I'm curious how much of this you see when the action is live. Are you seeing all of this in real-time or only when it gets slowed down?
