Explain Hella Turnovers: Bulls swipe Warriors' lunch money
HOW COULD THE DUBS LET COACH KERR DOWN LIKE THIS IN HIS HOMECOMING?!
The Golden State Warriors failed their coach last night. Steve Kerr had been absolutely owning his former team, the Chicago Bulls, as head coach of the Dubs. Kerr was riding an 11-game win streak against the team he helped win three championships.
But Sunday the Dubs fell apart, losing 132-118 in Chicago to drop to 4-17 on the road for the season. The Dubs coughed the ball up 23 times, resulting in 31 points off turnovers for Chicago that effectively sealed GSW’s fate.
Our guy Eric Apricot is world famous for dropping his brilliant Explain One Play videos after Warriors’ wins. But today we’re going to let him take some time off on this MLK holiday to be with his family and drink as much Hennessy as he wants. I’m taking over with my new video series entitled:
Explain Hella Turnovers
Let’s begin, class. First, let’s talk about how the fanbase damn near turned on JP for leading the league in turnovers earlier this season.
But how much can we blame the young Poole (and for the record I believe we can blame him plenty on some of those bad decisions) when his Hall-of-Fame vets are hella careless in their own right? Stephen Curry aka Mr. Unanimous had 8 turnovers last night of his own last night.
On Curry’s first turnover, he nonchalantly tries to zip a pass to the rolling Kevon Looney at the free throw line. Nikola Vucevic (who had a helluva game with 43 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 steals) deftly deflects the ball to a fellow Bull, killing GSW’s possession. BAD PASS TURNOVER!
Up next it gets a little more fun as the greatest player alive activates his trademark super turbo dribble off of a missed shot. There’s nothing quite like Curry leading the break with a rampaging dribble, forcing the defense to make a quick decision as to how they’ll deter him while simultaneously keeping track of his sprinting teammates.
Except this time, Curry loses the handle and the ball careens across the Bulls’ logo at half court and directly into the hustling Alex Caruso’s hands. This is the type of turnover that can really suck the momentum out of the team, going from a sure scoring opportunity and fastbreak highlight opportunity to a Three Stooges scene. LOST BALL TURNOVER!
Now here’s Curry looking to put the team on his back with the score getting out of hand late. He knows the team is going to need him to create something outta nothing to hack away at the 120-107 deficit with three minutes to go in the house that Kerr Jordan built.
So he lines up the feisty Caruso at the top of the arc, going right-to-left crossover behind the back to freeze the defender momentarily.Boom, Curry’s attack dribbles into the mid-range, setting up Caruso for a mid-range pump fake. But Caruso stays on his hip and mirrors the footwork, leaving Curry with no airspace and no place to go. TRAVELING VIOLATION!
Now let’s not get it twisted, Curry wasn’t the only one throwing erasing GSW possessions with mistakes and accidents. Draymond Green, the team’s resident point forward and knockout artist, had six turnovers of his own. Three of them were offensive fouls coming from screen attempts, but he also was guilty of unsuccessfully trying to thread the needle on some passes.
For example, Green sees this backdoor cut attempt from Poole, but the defender makes a great play to smack the ensuing pass away. BAD PASS TURNOVER!
Now I normally don’t pore over film looking at people’s mistakes unless it can help me on the basketball court when I’m hooping with the homies or killing them in NBA 2K. I have a lot of compassion for our team as proven champions deep in the thick of a dynastic run who may sometimes just not have it in them to get ramped up for wintertime basketball.
And I’m sure if someone followed me around with high definition cameras all day at my job they’d have a 71 minute YouTube video entitled, “Hardee Can’t Be Trusted To Come Back From Lunch On Time”.
But, as Coach Kerr said the team is struggling with mistakes and there are no excuses for it. It’s their to job perform, and we here at DNHQ have a discerning eye for identifying trash performances. Hell, we’ve collectively seen enough trash Warriors throughout the decades to know it when we see it.
Okay DNHQ, lay it on me: how bad was that game yesterday?
