More Baldwin video. Also some Pat Spencer video. I feel like he's pretty much an afterthought when people discuss McClung and Williams for a roster spot but I don't know, neither of those guys have ever been the GOAT at a fairly popular sport.
My hope for Baldwin is that by next year he can be as effective as Bjelica was was last year. Big that can space the floor, make some passes (either bjelica style or David west style in the high post), and play good positional defense. Like bjelica, he’ll probably get blown by on the perimeter and struggle against true 5s inside as well.
I hope that he ends up being a much better player than bjelica, but I think there’s a unique role that he can fill on this team in the near-ish term. This year, I have no expectations for him whatsoever besides staying healthy.
Don't feel like I have enough data about Spencer. Baldwin has a smooth stroke, but his release looks slow, so it's a good thing he's tall and has a high release point.
I like what I’ve seen from Spencer more than what I’ve seen from McClung, tbh, mostly cos he seems bigger and more rugged. Seems a bit like a poor man’s Donte, which could be intriguing … if we didn’t have Donte.
Of the young guys on the bubble (McClung, Quiñones, Spencer, Williams) the guy who intrigues me most and seems the least redundant to what we have is Williams. Would love to see him wow in training camp and grab one of the two-ways.
> Eric Paschall says he thought about giving up basketball this summer before signing a 2-way with Wolves. Says Donovan Mitchell was constantly in his ear encouraging him to stay with it
I continue to be ridiculously excited about the trajectory for these 2022-2023 Warriors. They just seem so loaded.
I haven't seen a single projection that takes into account the potential growth of Moody, Wiseman, Kuminga, and Klay. It's always "is this going to be the years that age catches up with Steph and Dray?"
This feels like the year to blow the doors off the league with our unfathomably deep team, and to figure out who stays and who goes next summer.
From "injured, not playing" to "playing but not the Klay before the injuries" to (hopefully) "second Splash Brother, defends the other team's best player."
I do think the questions about Curry and Draymond supersede the rest of the team questions in importance since they are the two best players, but I'm feeling fine about where those two will be this season (not that I have inside info or anything).
That's probably fair, but Wiggins and Poole are becoming increasingly important -- maybe even as important as Klay, depending on how he advances this year. And Kuminga, Moody, and Wiseman really need to show something this year. Glad DDV and JMG are also standing ready. Whoever said this team is loaded is right, at least on paper.
Loving Looney’s attitude on a team full of good attitudes is nothing special here at the HQ. But here’s a quote from him this weekend about working with Wiseman. His eventual replacement. The Dubs better f’ing take care of Looney to the end of his days or I’m going to be pissed.
“We play the same position, same offense,” Looney said. “He can help me, I can help him. I kind of know the ins and outs of the offense. I know what Steph (Curry), Draymond (Green) are thinking out there. Jordan (Poole). I know where they want the big to be. I can share that knowledge that took years to learn. But once you get to experience it live, it makes it a lot easier.”
Dang, does Curry look even more buff than before?? It's preaching to the choir here, but I still find it funny the guys claiming Curry couldn't survive in the 90s game because of his lack of physicality. Look at pics of Isiah Thomas and current Curry, it almost looks like Isiah is the tiny underdeveloped guy who couldn't survive any violence compared to chiseled Curry.
I was thinking he looked bigger - like a gymnast's body. Amazing how he can adjust his shot with the body changes he has had - maybe it matters less than I think, but if I looked like I could handle the parallel bars I think it would affect how I threw a ball.
> Moses Moody enters training camp with a clear opportunity to grab a permanent rotation spot. There’s already a bit of buzz behind the scenes that he’s been looking great in recent weeks after a strong summer league. But Moody is maintaining a patient approach to the opportunity.
2) Crowder trade demand adds to the feeling that Phoenix might see the wheels come all the way off this year. Chris Paul is 38, Ayton is disgruntled, I don't believe Booker is that dude, and they got their asses whooped in *embarrassing* fashion to end last year. Now they're gonna lose an above average player at the NBA's hardest to fill position (big wing) because he doesn't wanna be there.
I won't weep if they collapse. Not friendly to anything Chris Paul is a part of, and Ayton didn't endear himself by refusing to play in a blowout. Why does Crowder suddenly want to leave?
"The feeling I felt, it was a nice feeling," he said. "I got jealous of Golden State, seeing them in the parade and the ESPYs. You know that feeling now. You know what is getting stripped away from you."
Well, it's been one day since camp opened, and I've been thinking Warriors most of the time, couldn't sleep last night, and generally my adrenaline level has been up all day (not so common when you're 62).
I'm probably going to need a straitjacket and a sippy cup by the time the season kicks off.
Would be really interesting to see the demographics on DNHQ. Many different walks and stages of life. One common factor though, Blood Type: Gold Positive!
I don't know if there have been any demographic assessments of DNHQ participants, but I would guess that it represents a decent mix of races and ages. I would also guess that it's more male than female (if we're doing the gender binary). But that's exactly what they are: guesses. I have no idea.
FWIW, I'm Chinese, married to an African American, and have bi-racial children. Not that I think that'll turn out to be common among blog commenters.
As an old white man (born in 1970), I’m pretty sure you’re right about that fetishization, partly because Black bodies and Black culture are fetishized in all corners of our culture. It’s a really weird part of the racism deep in the country’s DNA. But I also think there are all kinds of other dynamics at play, including just general appreciation of people who have worked their asses off to be able to do something at an incredibly high level and the enjoyment of witnessing and rooting for their joy and success. And I’m old enough to remember how white players like Larry Bird were always praised for their intelligence while Black players of the same era like Julius Erving were praised for athleticism no matter how brilliant their minds were. That may still happen to a degree but not like it used to (Dray$ is a great example). I also think there’s probably good to come from white people looking up to, following, and identifying with Black heroes, especially if we can stay aware of the racial dynamics that are at play.
In any case, I hope you’ll keep posting and will try to be aware of any gatekeeping vibes.
As another person of color, this is honestly surprising to me. Most sports blogs that I’ve been a part of have been much more combative, and this is probably the most peaceful sports blog I’ve read or commented on. I think most of us are here to share opinions, which can be different from fan to fan. I think the sports debates that happen in the comment sections here are very respectful, fact based, and never resort to name calling.
As far as the “old white dudes have a weird fetish for young black men…”, Is in itself a combative statement… especially if you are assessing most of the people in this blog being white. I think the nba is like 90% black, but being obsessed with the nba (which is what sports blogs are for) isn’t the same as being obsessed with young black men.
“ My blood is the same blood as most of the young black men that play in the NBA, and that means something. It means a lot to me, and my community.”…. This statement actually seems very gate keeping.
But anyways I think this group has a lot of diversity in it, and is super chill when it comes to debating and educating us as fans. I find it a very inviting comment section and community. I hope you have a similar experience as I have
I am curious about the combative nature and gatekeeping you are referencing. I'm newer to DHNQ, can't really say I've seen it, but I am also a white guy, so maybe I've missed it. There are certain posters (who I have no idea about their ethnicity) that seem to garner more "likes", but really "likes" are irrelevant. Based simply on demographics and economic factors of the bay area, I think it's safe to say the majority of posters probably are white. There is a juxtaposition between that and the ethnic makeup of the team, but is that inherently a bad thing? Should white people not be fans of basketball because a minority of players are white? From my experience it seems Warriors have a lot of Asian fans as well, should they be the most scrutinized because there aren't many Asian NBA players?
I realize it is a complicated subject, and honestly from a white male perspective I am mostly ignorant. But I am curious to hear from other perspectives on what our fandom means to you, and any ways we can be better fans given the disparity between our ethnicity and the players on the team.
The majority of fans of every sport in the US are going to be white, based on demographics, and I would err on the side of "they are NBA fans who don't care that most players are black" rather than "there are a lot of white people who have decided to use the NBA as their avenue to fetishize black youth".

Dill update:
He seems to be walking more easily today and not laboring with every step. And I think he finally ate a little bit this morning. I had suggested it several times but had never seen any sign that he had eaten. And another good sign from yesterday... since he was a kitten, when I go to the bathroom, he always "attends." Yesterday afternoon, he got up from his favorite afternoon sleeping spot to spend some time with me there.
This evening Dill unexpectedly jumped up on my lap and spent over 90 minutes there. Apparently, my 'give him a bit of lovin' and leave him be' policy was not enough. It had to have hurt when he finally jumped down.
Just saw the post about Dill. Hope you’re feeling better and so is the whole Dilly family. We need the Dill to be in tip-top shape for the long season ahead.
I'm so glad Mr. Dill is better. I've been following your journey while I rehabilitate my own little feline familiar from a bad case of dermatitis that made him all freaky and paranoid. He's much better now, and so am I. I look forward to him pawing at the screen while the games are on again. Either he loves hoops, or he wants to catch and eat those little running dudes, but anyway his fascination makes me feel closer to him.
In a podcast hosted by The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami, Kerr revealed that he and GM Bob Myers were perplexed by the rumblings about Jonathan Kuminga’s alleged behavior. “I know there was that weird report that came out, I think Stephen A. Smith said something about [Kuminga], and honestly, Bob [Myers] and I when that came out, called each other and asked each other ‘where did that come from?’” Kerr said. “Because it made no sense, because JK’s been great, he’s done everything we’ve asked of him, he’s worked hard, I enjoy coaching him. He’s right where he needs to be and he’s gotta just keep getting better every day. But we’re very happy with his summer and everything he’s committed to.” 3 days ago – via Jedd Pagaduan @ Clutch Points
I buy it. Yes, it's what Kerr is going to say, following the PR script. And yes he's defending his guys. But overall I think this is a tempest in a teapot. Also known as reporters with 12 month long jobs trying to find any way possible to fill the air with their bloviating while the league is on vacation.
I don't think that's true. When there were reports of Jordan Bell's immaturity when he was still with the team, Kerr did not shy away from holding him accountable in public interviews, even straight up admonishing him at one point.
I get taking the words of a player's coach with a grain of salt but Kerr has demonstrated in the past that he isn't just going to butter a guy up if he isn't doing well and is certainly not opposed to using the media to motivate a player to improve. If Kuminga's work ethic was truly an issue for him and the CS, he would not have offered as full-throated of a rejection of these rumors.
I put a lot more stock in what Kerr says about Warriors players than what Stephen A or any media person writes as Kerr sees the players and/or is in contact with them all the time. It's not like he is afraid to get on players that don't do what he expects of them, we've seen him do it during games. Not are Green and Iguodala shy about getting up in their teammates' grills when they think it is warranted. What we mostly haven't seen from any Warriors team in the Kerr era is players and coaches stabbing each other in the back through the media so it would be pretty darn surprising if they all of a sudden made a special case for Kuminga
Firstly, that's the genetic fallacy. If Stephen A said the earth is round, I hope you wouldn't start worrying lmao. Evaluate things on their own merits.
Secondly, I'm not agreeing with Stephen A? Not sure where you got that.
How is it the opposite? The opposite of my statement would be putting stock in Kerr's comments.
In any case, regarding Stephen A's reports, they are absolutely useless on their face since he isn't exactly a credible source. What we do know is that Iggy/Dray/Poole have talked about Kuminga and hinted that his initial work ethic was flawed since he never had anyone to teach him how to work hard but that he's been willing to learn and improved tremendously.
This is distinct from Stephen A's report which I suspect exaggerates/hyperbolized these statements to "Kuminga is shortchanging the Warriors with a lack of work ethic".
