#SIXTEEN Between two offense-focused guards, Podz has better steals and ast/tov, which are more indicative of BBIQ & ability to build skills, which I think bodes better for defense.
#ONE - Howard has more upside in the NBA. He already has NBA size and shot. What I don't like about him is how much he looks like a taller slower Poole. Plus on offense, minus on defense. That said, given his size and effort, he has potential on the defensive end, and has shown flashes. Podz would be a good second rounder.
Dwight Howard will be 38 this Christmas, and he's playing in Taiwan and not here for a reason. We could have had him this past season if he was still any good. I didn't see enough of Tacko Fall to have an opinion on his skills. I know he didn't play much, and he's 27, so he's probably about as good now as he's going to get. I mostly remember he's gigantic.
I can warm up to this view. Otoh, good homework and savvy GM can come up with a player who will contribute in their rookie year. Don't ask me who that player is in the draft because they are not paying me to make a decision and it's too much work going through the film of al available players.
When you think about it, if we had drafted in accordance to DubNation HQ, we would have secured Tyrese Haliburton/Moses Moody/Alperun Sengun as our young core.
I'm a bit sad that we no longer have Kuminga, but that would have been a really nice young core as well. Great job y'all!!
Franz was the consensus actually. We would have had Haliburton/Franz/Moody. But of course butterflies flap their wings and having Haliburton for 2020-2021 season might have meant making the playoffs, not having as much urgency for 2021-2022, and not getting title #4. Or maybe we're three-peating.
#7 Moses Moody vs #9 Alperen Sengun (61% - 39%). To my amazement, Sengun wins the Twitter poll, but the DNHQ comment vote is a strong majority for Moody.
Boss Fight
Scottie Barnes and Jonathan Kuminga, The "What If They Fall" Showdown. People want Barnes (78%) and Kuminga (67%) over the field if available, and in the unlikely event both are available, 64% - 24% Barnes over Kuminga.
Final Wrapup
DFiB did some weighting of the votes and computed this average Non-Top-6 Big Board by DNHQ voters.
1. Moody
2. Sengun
3. Wagner
4. Bouknight
(...)"
IMO the top 3 choices are all good, but whoever picked Bouknight should do some introspection on heuristics applied at the time.
Barnes, Wagner, & Sengun, are all starters on their respective teams. Kuminga and Moody are not even close to starting except for a possible injury to an incumbent player. Of course, those other teams are not the elite Warriors who punch any upstarts, thereby preventing them from rising! Any truth in this?
To be fair, in the 22 games Kuminga played while Wiggins was out, he averaged 13.4 points on 56.3 percent shooting from the field and 44.4 percent from downtown while adding 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 24.1 minutes played.
Per 36, thats 20.1 ppg with 6.4 rpg and 3 assists per game which is quite solid.
kuminga has talent but he's not going to replace Wiggs or Dray as a starter. Kerr is the lion at the gate and he doesn't have the confidence in his game at present. Not using him in the playoffs is the major statement about him. Same with Lamb.
Who would Barnes, Wagner, Sengun replace in the starting lineup for the Warriors? I mean, on occasion Sengun might start over Loon and maybe Dray starts at 5 and Wagner at the 4 had we gone that way.
Doesn't the quote imply the DNHQ vote was for Barnes and Kuminga over the field if they were still on the board, and then Moody, Sengun, Wagner, Bouknight after that?
Hmm...I stand corrected. Well my personal board eventually had Franz at the top in my (obviously flawed) memory. And Jalen Williams last year was my draft crush, but I knew he would never fall. I guess I'm just a genius.
I sure am glad we never traded for Andrew Wiggins like I said was a mistake. And then traded Wiggins for Ben Simmons as I supported.
Wasn't it Memphis that supposedly was relying on a lot of external input (draft rankings, and so on) for their draft selections? They would never actually share this, but it would be interesting to hear what their experience was.
Of course, in a few years, there are (probably) going to be several AI-based drafting solutions.
Looking back at the 2020 draft tournament, I was right about Obi Toppin, Aaron Nesmith, Devin Vassel, and Tyrese Haliburton. I was exceedingly wrong when it came to LaMelo Ball who I predicted would be a bust.
Looking back at the 2021 draft, I was right about Davion Mitchell, Franz Wagner, Sengun, and Duarte. I was completely fucking wrong about Jalen Johnson (who I was absolutely in love with) and i was wrong about Josh Giddey.
I was terribly wrong about Bouknight early. Then when it became apparent Kuminga might slip, I was a major Kuminga proponent, and hope I end up on the right side of that one. I liked Haliburton (as did we all), but got on the Wiseman bandwagon late.
Honestly, I never even looked at Kuminga because I thought he was going to get picked early for sure. It was only later on when there became a chance he would slide that I really started evaluating him.
I voted for Howard with a big 🤷♂️ attached, mostly because Pods seems like Ty Jerome with a little more hops…and I really like Ty and his fit here and assume they’re keeping him
I was laughing like a mad man when we made that trade. I didn't know Wiggs was going to turn into All Star Two-Way Wiggs, but I liked him better than DLo straight up. To get a lottery pick in that deal made it a steal even before we knew how good Wiggs would turn out to be.
Multiple sources have confirmed Portland has interest in Deandre Ayton & could be willing to discuss a deal centered around the 3rd overall pick and additional pieces. Scoot Henderson & Brandon Miller are both considered to be foundational players in this upcoming NBA Draft."
Would the Blazers really do the 3rd pick and additional pieces for Ayton? Draft night shall be interesting, I guess.
Portland has really screwed themselves over the years with win-now moves. Seems like this would be another.
Dame, Simons, Ayton and Grant isn't nearly enough to contend in the West. They'd be better tearing it down (shopping Dame and Nurkic, maybe keeping Simons) and starting over.
Unnamed sources identified those multiple sources as Suns owner Matt Ishbia, Suns GM James Jones, and the bartender around the corner from Footprint Center Arena who kept serving Ishbia and Jones when they were already blasted shortly before confirming this story. A Blazers representative reportedly had no comment but was giggling uncontrollably when asked to confirm the story.
Reaves seems to be very good at reading the floor and has just enough athleticism and skill. The Lakers seem to be very good at developing and maximizing those types of players.
They said he might get a 4 year, 50 million contract. I say he should get Poole's agent.
Edit: I guess that's just the max Lakers can offer him outright, so probably the people pushing those numbers are the ones hoping he'll stay.. I guess from Gilbert Arenas rule they could match a much bigger offer though since he's a restricted free agent. But this playoff run is going to ensure Lakers have a lot of guys wanting to get paid.
On one hand, $100m for a guard 2 years removed from being undrafted seems crazy. On the other hand, if we had 2023 Reaves instead of 2023 Poole, might a championship have been in reach?? It's hard to imagine any team being that excited to offer him $100M though. But that's the agents job!
The only reason I don't think they'll offer him that money is because they're probably going to target Kyrie in free agency. They'll potentially have $40-$50 million in cap space this off-season, which coincidentally is what Kyrie's salary will be.
Blaming just the staff and young players is taking a simplified view, IMO.
You could also blame Klay himself for coming to camp out of shape and out of rhythm, then chucking his way into Warriors losses that required them to scramble just to make the playoffs, which wore him down.
You could also blame GP2 (and the Blazers) for needing more recovery time, which required Klay to play more.
You could also blame Wiggins for missing more than half the season, which required Klay to play more.
#SIXTEEN Ty Jerome convinced me this year: hustle, a reliable floater, passing, BBIQ > minus-level-defense+shooting. And Austin Reeves is proving (he said reluctantly) that that combo at 6'5", with very little athleticism, wingspan, etc. can make for a really good role player, which is something the Dubs need.
I've always said that Ty anchored the Warriors with his solid possession type style. Low TO's, very little offensive flash but subtle scoring dynamics, and an unknown quantity of defensive skill. Yet, there he was. What were the Warriors thinking when they guaranteed Lamb instead of Ty?
In my view, the only reason they would bring back either of Lamb or Ty is money or its lack of. They can't afford to pay them so two way contracts make sense. But I think both of the players will be gone to another team next season. In essence, the Warriors helped both remain in the NBA similarly to GP2. The bench is a game within a game for the Warriors. Poole has been the key. Without him, we saw what happened. If he's traded, it has to be for real skill and talent or the future is in doubt.
Ty Jerome will never make a good Warrior with that 5 to 1 assist to turnover ratio of his. How can you expect to keep the fans engaged if you don't throw them the ball every once in a while.
Those 42 minutes in game one showed last night in a big way. Really frustrated that DEN is finding the same gaping holes in the Lakers tired defense that GS found, but is making the shots. The Klay / Poole 11/51 from 3 over the last four games of the series is looking more and more ghastly every time Michael Porter and Bruce Brown(!) make one.
Normally I would agree, but I'm not convinced LeBron and AD will still be verticle by game 5. Too many minutes in the losses, another series with no three day break, and Denver is doing what GS did not (or actually could not because of lack of any size whatsoever) to AD. AD moves further and further from the paint when you hit him. DEN is throwing three guys at him to bump him around off-ball all the time. Pretty sure Aaron Gordon's sole instruction this series is to foul out on AD by the most physical means possible. By game 5, AD may be starting his post-ups in Sheboygan.
Aside from injury, I wouldn't count out Lebron. Too much of a competitor.
One of the facets that no one is addressing is the lack of playing time the Lakers have had to evaluate and gel the 'new' team that appeared at the trade deadline. You don't add that many new players to the mix and not have glitches in the rotations. Takes time to settle and figure out who should be on the floor and when. Look at the run they've had getting back to the playoffs from a miserable season. I know the odds are on Denver and should be, but the Lakers may surprise us. So far, the addition of Jamal Murray back in the rotation has been huge for Denver. He is a baller.
Nick Wright was hanging banners on First Things First, celebrating the "death" of the Warriors (2015-2023). Said something along the lines of "finally we can be rid of them".
Hope he keeps that same energy a week from now if Lebron and the Lakers get bounced.
They have a bunch of free agents including DLo, Schroeder, Walker, Reeves, Brown, Gabriel, Thompson. They also have a team option for Beasley for over $16 million, which I think they'll probably decline.
Currently they have 10 players signed through next season and they'll be about $27 million under the cap, or $43 million under the cap if they decline Beasley's option.
I think he realized that with an unlikable face, even more unlikable speaking style and without any great analysis skills, playing the part of the “hot take heal” would be his only path to success.
#SIXTEEN Between two offense-focused guards, Podz has better steals and ast/tov, which are more indicative of BBIQ & ability to build skills, which I think bodes better for defense.

For those who like to think Big: how about bringing Dwight Howard and Tacko Fall in from China to compete for roster spots this summer?
Dwight Howard will be 38 this Christmas, and he's playing in Taiwan and not here for a reason. We could have had him this past season if he was still any good. I didn't see enough of Tacko Fall to have an opinion on his skills. I know he didn't play much, and he's 27, so he's probably about as good now as he's going to get. I mostly remember he's gigantic.
I have to admit, i dont care much this pick. I want to package it for some trade lmao.
I can warm up to this view. Otoh, good homework and savvy GM can come up with a player who will contribute in their rookie year. Don't ask me who that player is in the draft because they are not paying me to make a decision and it's too much work going through the film of al available players.
I'm in the same boat on this one.

Pretty sure Moody was the pick.
Because I remember making a post saying I want Wagner over the consensus Moody because I thought Moody had a shot at being there at 14.
I liked Wagner and Moody but I did not think Moody would still be there at 14. I was amazed when we got him there.
We can't assume Kerr would have played all of those young players. After all Moody couldn't get off the bench for the most part until very recently.
The average Non-Top-6 Big Board by DNHQ voters (according to the article) had the order being Moody, Sengun, and then Wagner.

Yes, it does exactly that. I recall that the chances of them slipping to us was considered low. JK was supposed to be locked into 5th or 6th at worst.
Hmm...I stand corrected. Well my personal board eventually had Franz at the top in my (obviously flawed) memory. And Jalen Williams last year was my draft crush, but I knew he would never fall. I guess I'm just a genius.

Man with Tyrese the dynasty would be going strong…

There was a reason why the Warriors traded him to the Wolves for Wiggins three years ago.

Makes no sense that a 2nd year undrafted player is playing like a 20 year vet on the brightest stage
Reaves seems to be very good at reading the floor and has just enough athleticism and skill. The Lakers seem to be very good at developing and maximizing those types of players.

Yeah, evidently he's eligible for up to 100-ish. Which is crazy, but also... feels like he might get it, or something close?
On one hand, $100m for a guard 2 years removed from being undrafted seems crazy. On the other hand, if we had 2023 Reaves instead of 2023 Poole, might a championship have been in reach?? It's hard to imagine any team being that excited to offer him $100M though. But that's the agents job!

Not playing much more than any series last year, tbh...

You left out Kerr, stubborn to a fault.

SWEEP THEM
DLo has been the weakest link on the Lakers starting lineup. He's -41 in 2 games of the series so far.
They should trade DLo to MN for a better player and a high 1st round pick. This has been proven to work.
D’Lo for Ant and a 1st; who says “no”?
Probably only Ant...
