The 2024-25 GSW rollercoaster season, game by game (2025-08-06)
Eric Apricot (31 ♡):
I’ve been trying to avoid talking about JK unless directly asked, but I can’t resist this. Monte Poole’s latest calls JK “a terrific scoring soloist” and many other think pieces about JK take for granted a similar idea that JK is a great iso player but Kerr hates iso.
I can’t predict if JK will *become* a terrific isolation player, but if he was terrific now, then there would be no problem and he’d be paid and get minutes.
Let’s look at his stats from his most shining moment, these playoffs — when he was allowed to play. The NBA tracks how many points per possession you score on isolation.
JK is #34 out of 44 qualifying players. On GSW alone he is behind
#5 Steph
#17 Buddy(?!)
#28 Jimmy
One statistic is not a proof. But I have not seen evidence (statistical or close film watch) that JK is terrific at isolation yet. At this point, the burden is on the claimer to prove that JK is a plus isolation player.

Shawyer (12 ♡):
He can't dribble. That alone keeps him from being a premier ISO player imho
Arnold (8 ♡):
Totally agree on this. I keep wanting JK to be a terrific iso player. I see the tools - the elite footspeed and athleticism. He should be a good iso player. He can elevate and shoot mid-range jumpers anytime he wants. His problems are: his mid-range jump-shot accuracy is average. It's not like SGA or Jalen Williams or Kawhi, where the mid-range jumper off the bounce has great accuracy.
JK can draw fouls, but his free throw accuracy is mediocre. When he drives, his handles are shaky and help-defenders can poke the ball away. There are also times when he forces drives seeking fouls instead of just trying to finish at the rim. When the refs don't call it, he's slow to get back on D, and it's a 5 on 4 on the other end.
In the big picture = so far, JK's iso's haven't been very efficient. But he's still very young. There's a chance his mid-range jumper and FT accuracy improves.
Mr.Plow (7 ♡):
It reminds me of that scene in Moneyball where all the scouts are talking about how a player has a great looking swing despite not actually being a good hitter. JK looks like a traditionally good ISO scorer with how he plays, but that doesnt mean you are one
Run_TMC (8 ♡):
@Eric: Shush!
@Other 29 Teams: JK is a terrific isolation scorer!

Eric Apricot (12 ♡):
On Steph going crazy: “well I’ve seen it before… but I didn’t enjoy it in 2022”
Abaddon (12 ♡):
A lot of players and coaches have commented on how fun it was to be on Steph's side for once. Always fun to see an (otherwise) opposing player fanning just like us.
Loon Gehrig (11 ♡):
Despite the ending, a very entertaining season (especially post-Butler) and of course very entertaining DNHQ articles!
Eric Apricot (11 ♡):
Butler’s playoff stats are a concern. However, he was quite injured and probably should not have played. Looking at a larger sample, during the regular season Jimmy was #37 of 277 and JK was #235 in ISO points per possession.

Eric Apricot (8 ♡):
Perks with a G-League update, including the welcome news that SCW acquired Marques Bolden.
@gswcba.bsky.social: [[ Santa Cruz Warriors acquired the rights to Marques Bolden yesterday, who participated in the past two Summer Leagues with GSW and has made a great impression on their staff.
He spent all of last season rehabbing a torn Achilles.
Bolden projects as their Opening Night center.
Warriors do not need to sign him for training camp since they already have his GL rights, but don't be surprised if he gets shuffled in and out of their training camp roster on an Exhibit 10 to make him eligible for the bonus.
He also has one year of two-way eligibility left.
Warriors were previously reported to have reached E10 agreements with LJ Cryer (G), Chance McMillian (G), and Coleman Hawkins (C).
Those three with Moni would take up SCW's four affiliate spots and build out half their roster, along with returning rights player, Marques Bolden.
The Warriors are bringing in 6'10 C Jacksen Moni to Santa Cruz on what should be an Exhibit 10.
Moni, a floor-spacing & facilitating big man, played for the Spurs in Summer League after going undrafted.
Last season at NDSU, he posted: 20.6ppg, 5.6rpg, 3.7apg on .508/.408/.837.
Jacksen Moni at 22-years-old is an interesting developmental prospect and great system fit with his outside range (37% on 657 3PA in college) and ability to find cutters and open shooters.
Santa Cruz projects with a very versatile frontcourt in Moni, Hawkins, Bolden, and Toohey.

belilaugh (8 ♡):
Butler is a great isolation player, 86th percentile this past season for the Warriors on 2.5 possessions a game, and 76th percentile this past season for the Heat on 1.8 possessions a game. And he is doing it with a second unit that is built almost entirely around him isolating, not just opportunistically hunting mismatches.
The playoffs come down to whether you believe he wasn't compromised by the back injury that had him visibly runing incorrectly after he came back and whether you believe anyone other than like Steph Curry could have succeeded in the conditions he was in against Minnesota (going against McDaniels with Gobert on the inside with multiple non-shooters/non-scorers surrounding him at all times). Because up until the exact moment where he got hurt, including the Clipper game and play-in game and Game 1 of the playoffs, he was dominating.
Ando (8 ♡):
I can't remember, did the Warriors have a guy who played lacrosse? The announcers never mentioned it.

Eric Apricot (21 ♡):
“from what I've been told, Melton, Horford, GP II are all waiting on this Kuminga situation to resolve in order for them to sign their deals. Because it could shake out in a way where they'll get more money. But they're prepared to sign.”
WCoastD (12 ♡):
I want to send all 3 a thank you card. They’ve been awesome.
TwoRingTest (6 ♡):
super-happy GPII will probably be coming back.
GPII on a $10 mil contract is a little puckery, given our cap situation. GPII on a vet min is a slam-dunk addition ... at that price, his injury history is not really that much of a factor.
Eric Apricot (21 ♡):
I am planning to run one of these player interviews a week and I have Will Richard, Moses and TJD lined up (in that order).
But to spoil it, TJD says he wasn’t in good enough shape last season so he’s mentioned he’s working on that this summer plus free throws.
Nellie (14 ♡):
I love that he chose a literacy program for his charity. Not that there’s any shortage of worthy causes out there, but I’m always charmed when athletes take an interest in education. Reminds me of those posters that used to hang in school libraries when I was a kid. Bo Jackson reading Hemingway... 😍
Irrationally optimistic (12 ♡):
Granted I had a prior personal affinity for stroopwafel, but I have some rational optimism about this young man.
I'd love to be able to drop a dunking Dutchman or Flying Dutchman reference in here but even I understand that the only thing about Post that flies is his 3 ball.
fzwinter (6 ♡):
Maybe we'll get a windmill dunk this year
Sleepy Freud (10 ♡):
Well, after Kuminga. 😊
Sleepy Freud (8 ♡):
I assume it’s time served — he’s the only one in the top tier who’s been with the same team anywhere near as long as he has (now going into season 17!)
GlueAndBold (8 ♡):
Both, and I was supposed to not care about football years ago. The whole league is a crime. But I can't help getting interested whenever the Niners make a Superbowl run- they were the team of my childhood.
belilaugh (7 ♡):
To be honest I think it still remains to be seen if Post is going to stick in the NBA. He's going to need to shoot the ball at a high level because I don't know if the rest of what he does is NBA caliber (his passing probably is to be fair). Not a great jumper/finisher, didn't do much in the way of blocking shots, not very switchable, didn't rebound that well. And he's already 25 years old, turning 26 in December so he probably doesn't have a lot of additional potential from where he is now.
I think if he can continue hitting 40% from three then he is definitely useful but like what if he falls to 36%, how useful is he then? Does he do enough otherwise? He was struggling with his shot in the playoffs and he got phased out of the rotation pretty quickly by Kerr.
void (7 ♡):
"if anything changes we'll be here to talk about it, if not we'll just discuss Jonathan Kuminga again, cause that's what we do on Warriors +/-. This is Jonathan Kuminga +/- now." lol
Hoops2518 (7 ♡):
I really like this guy.
He is a competitor which is most important if you are lacking great physical gifts.
He is also self aware.
I think he will be a little better on D and scoring inside.
Now let’s see what TJD returns with.

TwoRingTest (6 ♡):
Lest we've forgotten, his stats last regular season:
42 games played, 16 minutes a game.
.408 on 3s, TS .595
per 36:
17.8 pts/7.8 rbs/2.9 asts
He needs to improve the last two substantially to get into Loon's range as a rebounder and an assist guy (doubtful on the rebounds, more than doable on the assists).
But, he's a rook and those are damn good numbers.
Andy Lee (6 ♡):
He seems like he generally knows what he's doing on the chessboard - here's a link to the games if you're interested: https://www.chess.com/events/2025-freestyle-chess-grand-slam-las-vegas-nba/games
He was up a queen and accidentally stalemated Grant Williams in the only game he drew, so he's definitely heads and shoulders above everyone else who played in the event.
On a side note, Daryl Morey appears to be a cheapo artist, and beat Derrick Rose in five moves in the last round.
Run_TMC (5 ♡):
No shade on QP. I like him and would love to see him level up to help the upcoming season push, but:
a) He cannot replace Loon (I don't even thing QP does yoga let alone set bone crushing screens)
b) a bigger steal than Dray would put him just below Jokic in the all time best 2nd round picks, so "could" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
DNHQ comments of the week: the endless trek to a Kuminga contract; Summer League (2025-08-01)
Eric Apricot (18 ♡):
Here is a brilliant idea I just had for fixing all the problems of the lottery and tanking. At the start of every season, teams take turns (in ascending order of number of wins) drafting a Proxy team, which is any team besides their own. At the end of the season, there is a draft in ascending order of wins of your Proxy team.
So for instance, this year UTA gets first pick of a proxy, and they choose WAS. If WAS finishes the season last, then UTA will get the #1 pick, etc. WAS picks, say, CHA, as their proxy. So now WAS has no incentive to tank for themselves and maybe even a little screw-you attitude towards UTA. But on the whole, if teams draft proxies well then they will get better player draft picks.
You're welcome.

Kuminga/Podz/Moody/Santos and an unprotected pick in a strong draft for Camara and Rozier? How does that help the Warriors?
Sleepy Freud (11 ♡):
Melton, Jimmy, Moody, Podz, Payton, Santos, Richard, in some order.
Plus Keon Ellis, when Sac finally agrees to cough him up in a JK trade.
Or we keep JK and add him to the mix.
Arash (11 ♡):
I was perusing through Warriors reddit/twitter and I truly don't understand why people are coming down so hard on JK.
Sure, I’m frustrated too. But I can’t bring myself to add more negativity to the mix, because honestly… haven’t we all been there? Haven’t we all had to stand up for ourselves at work, asking to be paid what we think we’re worth? If you’ve ever had to negotiate a raise, then you understand why JK is doing everything he can to secure his future.
And haven’t you ever felt stuck in a job where your talents weren’t being used—and suddenly, another opportunity came along that just made more sense? If so, then it’s not hard to see why Kuminga might be drawn to the Kings, who are offering him a starting role and more minutes.
Or maybe you’ve worked under a boss who didn’t quite “get” you, or whose leadership style just didn’t click. All you wanted was a clean slate—someone who believed in what you could do. If that sounds familiar, then you can understand why JK might want to play for a coach who sees his potential and trusts him to play through mistakes.
And for those who say the money makes empathy irrelevant—well, it’s worth noticing where that empathy stops. It seems to run dry for the 21-year-old African man trying to lift his family up, but not for the billion-dollar franchise that’s gotten years of value from his rookie contract.
At the end of the day, both sides are just trying to get the best deal they can. That doesn’t make either of them the villain and we should act accordingly.

Im gonna say the quiet part out loud: A lotto protected Kangz pick might as well be a soiled napkin. That won’t convey as a first round pick.
TwoRingTest (10 ♡):
I don't really see Buddy for Monk as a win (much less Kuminga going out the door). Hope we don't do that.
TwoRingTest (9 ♡):
Agreed.
yuck, I really don't like the idea of Monk.
Small, not much defense.
He's really not a great shooter (TS% .549 last season ... barely above JK's admittedly lousy shooting season). He's basically had two efficient shooting seasons in his career, plus two meh seasons for a SG, and the rest, pretty bad.
I don't see how you can play him with Steph ... wasn't that the knock on JK?
Really hope we can do better.
Captain Jack (8 ♡):
OT: Came back from this mornings run and had to guard an ex-pro who played somewhere in South America. I gotta say he is the softest player I've ever seen and it really bums me out considering how talented he is. His playstyle reminds me a bit of John Salmons but calls fouls like he's SGA. The man called 6 fouls in a row and we were going up vertically while he was bumping into us.
To makes matters worse his girl was barking on the sideline wearing a f**king Lakers hat. Of course.
Sleepy Freud (8 ♡):
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the Warriors way.

| Points | 27,128 | 32,292
| Assists | 6,815 | 5,633
| Rebounds | 7,227 | 6,672

| Championships | 3 | 6
| All-Star Selections | 12 | 14
| All-NBA 1st Teams | 10 | 10
| All-Defensive 1st Teams | 5 | 9
BUT WAIT!!!! THAT'S ONLY THE **FIRST HALF** OF LEBRON'S CAREER, 2003-2016
Once he was done with that, let's look at LeBron 2017–2024 vs. Magic Johnson's career:
| Seasons | 8 | 13
| Points | 14,345+ | 17,707
| Assists | 4,756+ | 10,141
| Rebounds | 4,216+ | 6,559
| FG% | 50.3% | 52.0%
| PPG | 26.0 | 19.5
| APG | 6.7 | 11.2

| MVPs | 0 | 3
| Finals MVPs | 1 | 3
| Championships | 1 | 5
| All-Star Selections | 8 | 12
| All-NBA 1st/2nd Teams | 6 | 10
I mean, come on. That's TWO Hall of Fame careers. Boy do I wish I could say that Steph is the GOAT, but this is ridiculous.
Sleepy Freud (13 ♡):
Can’t remember which podcaster said it, but this one worked for me: MJ’s the best player ever; LeBron has had the best career ever.
So hard to compare the pre- social media era to the current one, but imo peak MJ was/is just a qualitative level above LeBron by all the intangible measures: aura, intimidation, charisma, style, grace, awesomeness, coolness, mystique, etc…
So I like the best player v best career split vote.
Abaddon (11 ♡):
LeBron best NBA career, probably yes. Best career including college, Kareem’s wax pretty damn amazing…. 6 (!) MVPs is nuts. His UCLA career, his Milwaukee career, his Lakers tenure… really remarkable. Add in his social activism and he’s one of a kind.
LeBron edges him out still but not by a lot IMHO.
g8tgod (13 ♡):
Gotta define 'greatest.' LeBron easily wins the stats battle. But Curry revolutionized the way the game is played, not just in the NBA but all the way down to youth level and around the world.
LeBron moved from team to team, encouraging franchises to mortgage the future for a chance at a championship. Consequently, he was able to garner four (if we include the weird intermission-bubble championship during the pandemic shutdown). Curry stayed put and achieved four by working with whatever the Warriors could get.
Steph is widely praised for his unselfishness, off-ball movement, and joyful leadership, which foster a collaborative team environment. His style of play--constant motion, absurd deep-range shooting, and unparalleled gravity--stretches defenses to the breaking point and creates space and opportunities for others to thrive. He has made nearly all of his teammates better (this side of Kuminga and Oubre). LeBron has been the sun around which his teammates have revolved. They were expected to sacrifice scoring and usage to complement him.
I guess it comes down to what the beholder values most. I can't criticize anyone who picks LeBron as the greatest--the guy is a force--but in a team game, give me the guy who has been loyal to one franchise and made nearly all of his teammates better.
ChemKoala (7 ♡):
LeBron has been an all-star for as long as Wembenyama has been alive. That said, Lebron plays the game to perfection, but he ended up playing Curry's game and who's to say that's not the real GOAT?
belilaugh (8 ♡):
Also there's a lot more knowledge about extending careers these days, LeBron allegedly spends like 1-1.5 million a year on maintaining his body although he denies that. Bill Russell wasn't doing that.
I think comparing how much they dominated at their (extended) peaks is probably more translatable than comparing the longevity (and also that comparing stats across eras can get difficult and it should be more about how much you dominated your era). I remember hearing a joking discussion about how in baseball you have "compilers" who play a long time and get a bunch of stats which makes them look more impressive historically than they felt at the time, and I think it was actually a salient point.
Also yes, I do think Curry has a case for GOAT.
WCoastD (7 ♡):
How many chances is one guy supposed to get? If he couldn’t jump high, these conversations wouldn’t be happening. I saw an article where a league scout or exec referred to JK as a “tease.” I’ll leave that right there.

In the aftermath of Kuminga's "betting on myself" Instagram post, Slater drops an article which definitively states that the Warriors are "“. . . shutting down sign-and-trade talks; they found nothing appealing there. And they believe he is going to be on the roster. Their stance is that he will be on the roster to start next season.”
If I'm allowed to be a bit conspiratorial, I think the Warriors FO leaked this to send a clear shot across the bow essentially calling Kuminga's bluff. Reports indicate that they have offered a 2 year 45 million contract with a 2nd year team option/waived no trade clause.
Salary-wise, its a good deal since it matches the yearly averages of the Sun's 4 year 90 million contract offer. Furthermore, the team option allows for 1) Waiving and extension if he plays well in his new team AND 2) Waiving and hitting FA in which case he secured far more money than he would have with the QO.
In terms of securing control over his career (role/minutes/personnel and scheme fit), the contract is limited to two years after which he gets full free agency. Functionally, he would only have to wait 1 more year to gain full control which is manageable.
Unlike the previous offers that had reportedly been in play, I think it's an excellent contract to draw a line in the sand with. Kuminga's representation have nothing left to play other than biting the bullet which IMHO would clearly be a poor decision. I'm relatively confident that they will eventually sign to this rumored contract and FO will angle for a mid-season trade. Alternatively, this is all just angling to increase sign and trade value.
DFiB (9 ♡):
It’s not even conspiratorial… they’re clearly trying to end the dance that’s gone on long enough. “We’re done listening to the crap offers y’all have kept putting in front of us. Here’s our best offer, come back when you’ve decided what you want to do with it.”

Yeah. If they were mini wilts, Steph all the way BUT that was not the original proposition.
I don't think 5 Steph's could ever stop 5 wilts from scoring (Full court pressure wouldn't work, the Wilts would just throw it over the top. In the half court, same thing. Alley oop dunks galore. I love Steph and while he is the deadliest 3 point shooter ever, he still hit's less than 50% of his shots. To match the the Wilts near 100% scoring, the Stephs would have to hit on 2/3rds of his threes. Now The Wilts would have a hard time chasing the Stephs around and would probably just play zone and hope to hold the Stephs to less 662/3rds shooting percentage. Of course the Stephs could try dribbling around the Wilts but might sacrifice 3s for 2s which they definitely can't afford. I haven't even addressed rebounding ...
Given good tactics and high effort by both sides, i just don't see how the Stephs can score consistently enough to stay with the Wilts.
Edit: also, depending on the rules, all the Stephs would foul out ...
fzwinter (7 ♡):
Just have to have a deep bench of Stephs and play Hack-a-Wilt. Career 51.1% foul shooter (and only 54.0% on twos, which I found surprising). Of course, the Stephs might have a little difficulty blocking out the Wilts on missed FTs.
Also noticed that, for his entire 14 year career, Wilt averaged 45.8 minutes per game and never fouled out. He should have played for Thibs

If this is too nerdy, please give me more of it. I thoroughly enjoyed this nerdiness a lot because I could understand the ways they were presented and explained without being self-conscious about my lack of bbiq.
For instance, I recognized what "kinetic linking" was by how Mr. Campbell talked about it, with the example he used in Mike Tyson's uppercut, which made so much sense. I also appreciated how he briefly touched on his evaluation process in helping players with their shooting. The analyses he shared on the skills of JK, Podz, Buddy, Steph and Coach Kerr were thoughtful, methodical and knowledgeable. It was a pleasure to listen to and learn from his insights as a shooting coach.
This learning experience wouldn't have been possible without you, Eric. I appreciate the overall subject you chose and the masterful manner in which you directed the discourse to flow naturally. This is especially true since I've been wondering about the Warriors organization's internal workings, specifically their basketball operations at the team level. I keep thinking about what kind of resources they provide the players to help them acclimate and develop when they join the team through draft or trade. With the unfolding of JK's situation, it's given me a ton of questions on this subject.
On that note, I agree with the idea that the Dubs should hire Mr. Campbell immediately. C'mon Warriors FO! Stop procrastinating and get to it already!

Why aren't we getting into the weeds? Let's get into the weeds!

I’m in Oahu right now. Tried evacuating but couldn’t get far, as access to freeways inland from Waikiki, are limited… abandoned the car and headed back to the hotel on foot. Pretty surreal. Waited with my family on the 29th floor of the hotel, watching the ocean from the balcony… as 7:10 passed, the expected arrival time of the tsunami, cheers started growing louder and louder for a good ten plus minutes… we’re not completely out of the woods yet but hopefully tsunami warning gets lifted soon.

Loved the series. Not even slightly too nerdy. I would be fine with going deeper. Like breaking down every Dubs’ shooting form, so we can learn what to watch for in game to understand why things are working or not. You can’t out nerd us here at the HQ!

My goal was always to work with a team, but I've never had that opportunity (I've tried to get them). So, I keep trying to do the best I can with each opportunity that's presented.
I'm a big believer in the power of collaboration.
On the Jimmy/Buddy bobblehead. It’s not Batman and Robin. It’s them at a press conference. You can see it here: https://bsky.app/profile/kerithburke.bsky.social/post/3lwa7p36k4c2g
Omg y'all.
They're giving away JB and Buddy Best Buddies Bobbleheads at the October 17th game.
This is the vibe I need from this team right now.
