Post game sad fan thread: Curry goes for 50, but Warriors fall well short; drop to 0-8 on the road
Turns out that Wiseman was not, in fact, the problem
Stephen Curry was on fire all night. Attacking from inside and out, relentlessly running around the edges of things off ball and then attacking the teeth of the defense with the ball. It was one of those nights that you can’t help but treasure. A beautiful game that is a gift from one of the best to ever play the game.
Unfortunately, the rest of the Golden State Warriors stunk. Totally worked by the Phoenix Suns, the Warriors squandered Curry’s big night. I know it’s a team game, and one player can’t do it all by themselves, but it still hurts on a very visceral level to see Curry’s heroic efforts this season crumbling into ineffectiveness because the roster flaws are too much to overcome.
Klay Thompson had another horrible night. It’s a tricky situation because you don’t want him to not play like himself… but then again if his shot isn’t falling like this you have to wonder how far it will get pushed before Klay dials back the amount of shots he takes.
But much like the Wiseman demotion, it’s about way more than that one isolated player. The Warriors defense looks cooked. Draymond Green used to shut down offenses, and now looks completely inept. The man-to-man coverage is bad, so the coaching staff switched to zone. Unfortunately, the zone is also bad. 130 points given up tonight. Still plenty of season left, but the pattern that has emerged so far is troubling, to put it gently. I know they always say that teams will be looking at trades, but I really hope the front office understands the weight of Curry and his timeline.

For now, it’s just another data point. Another road loss, dropping the Warriors to 0-8 on the road this season - a totally absurd stat. The head scratching is beginning to abate because anyone watching can see pretty clearly what the numerous problems are right now with this roster. Curry scored 50 points tonight. The entire rest of the roster? Just 12 more (for 62 total). Curry can do a lot, more than any player I’ve seen in my life - but he can’t do everything.

There’s a scene in The Crow (one of the greatest films ever made) where the titular character is squeezing the heroin out of some junkies arm. And despite all the violence going on around them, the dude cries out not for his life, but to say “you’re wasting it!” I don’t particularly care how well we understand the roster construction dynamics that have brought the team to this point, it just feels increasingly bad watching Curry do so much while the team stumbles into all these losses.
Golden State has a day off, then plays the New York Knicks on Friday. Then another day off with the Houston Rockets coming on Sunday. Get it together!
