Jordan poole with another offseason of crazy work ethic is about to go nuckin futs this year, even with wiggins possibly being out I have no issue sliding poole into the starting lineup, I believe with his added strength and experience he will be a solid defender he has very quick feet and an insane quick first step

Watching that first video, seeing an absolutely SICK screen and pass by Quese to a cutting Poole and I'm just disappointed again we don't have that guy back.

If Wiggins doesn’t budge, I think he needs to be taken out of the starting lineup altogether, as the in and out with road and home games has to be disruptive for everyone getting acclimated to their roles and rotations, no? Even would be disruptive coming off the bench but it’s probably more preferable than him doing it to the starting unit I’d imagine. Either way, if it comes to this he should get traded, even for a lesser player, right? One who would at least not need considerations like Wiggins missing half the games would. Also would get the media headache away, which the team didn’t enjoy when KD was around.

Heck, I’d be even cool with him just not being part of the rotation at all, letting him stew until he got vaxxed and even lessens the chances he’s out there spreading covid to visiting teams’ players and also not riling opposing teams’ fans to make too much noise booing and such while he’s out there. I doubt Kerr would do that nor do I think Lacob would be cool with all that money just be sitting around whenever Wiggins is available to play if not even that would make Wiggins budge.

But yeah, if not, I think dude just needs to be gone from the team, or at least a role where it’s funking up the rotations, especially while the young guys gotta learn a certain flow when it comes to that too.

Hopefully he budges and this is all moot.

In case you were curious about Kuminga’s role:

***

Steve Kerr on Jonathan Kuminga: "Immediately he looks like a 4 because of his power, strength in his body, ability to guard multiple positions. I think the easiest way for him to make an impact will be as a 4, limiting what he has to do offensively...Dive man, roll man, DHO guy."

If we keep things simple for him, I don't see how he doesn't get minutes at the 4 from the get go. Play hard on defense and just finish plays at the rim. Easy peasy

His ability to stay on the floor will be more about his D than his O, like Wiseman last year.

It's still crazy how he went from guarding random high school centers (most of them probably aren't even good enough to play in college) to the most skilled players in the world without a summer league after a year off pretty much. What if Draymond isn't w/ the team because he "doesn't feel comfortable" having to play with unvaccinated players or something to that effect? My initial thought when he missed media day was: I wonder if Draymond disagreed with Wiggs, would he be able to hold back from saying some wild stuff? It at least seems plausible to me that Dray would tell the team: "figure out the Wiggins thing, then I'll show up".

I'm probably wrong but did this cross anyone else's mind?

He played with unvaccinated players for most of last season and was playing with Beal in the lead up to the Olympics.

He almost certainly is dealing with some family issues.

Expand full comment

I probably didn't make it clear enough but my thought is not necessarily that Draymond requires everyone around him to be vaccinated. It's more so that he'd be mad at Wiggs for refusing to do it and affecting the team in a negative way.

I'd bet that if Draymond has beef with Wiggins, the team would accept an excuse and allow him to stay home while they try and resolve it rather than turning training camp into more of a circus.

Once again, just theorizing for fun and I super hope that whatever family issues that Draymond is dealing with are resolved soon and everyone is healthy and safe.

Expand full comment

I cannot imagine Draymond taking his (presumed) anger at Wiggins out on the team by not being there. That's not who he is.

Expand full comment

I feel you, the theorizing is the best part.

But yeah, Galloway confirmed it was a family issue.

Expand full comment

I think it that we’re the case, he’d tell Wiggins to get off his court, not hide from everyone.

Expand full comment

It kind of doesn't add up because he played like year with Wiggins knowing his stance on the vaccine. Maybe he changed his mind since?

Expand full comment

I think the issue of not being able to play with the team due to the SF law changes the dynamic. Draymond has a history of disagreeing with teammates who aren't fully bought in.

The potential excuse of not coming because "being around unvaccinated individuals places vulnerable family members at risk" might be enough for the team to allow the absense. Also, he would eventually show up when/if Wiggs hits the October 13th deadline.

This is just a theory and I don't even believe it myself yet but I just thought it might be interesting to share.

Expand full comment

Yep, I see that side too and can't argue that.

People asked about the impact on the cap if a player misses games for lack of vaccination. Here is another piece of the puzzle:

***

Essentially, Wiggins and Irving would be missing out on $300K per home game if they can’t play because of local vaccine mandates. The league is still discussing if this will be a league fine or a team fine, according to Marks, which could impact the luxury bills for the Warriors and Nets.

So, here's my theory of where Wiggins is coming from. This is (almost) complete SPECULATION so please treat it as such.

If I had to guess, there are a couple of possible issues here. One is with the MRNA vaccines, which are using a brand-new method that does not have a lot of historical data to understand long-term effects. The J&J should be less risky when looked at through this lens. The other is with all vaccines, in that fetal stem cell lines were used for part of the development/testing/production of both the MRNA vaccines and the J&J (see https://www.nebraskamed.com/COVID/you-asked-we-answered-do-the-covid-19-vaccines-contain-aborted-fetal-cells) -- although neither vaccine CONTAINS fetal stem cells. The Vatican has issued a statement allowing Roman Catholics to receive either vaccine, however that might not carry weight with Christians of other denominations. I was originally under the impression J&J did not use fetal stem cell lines, however they are used in the production of the vaccine, so if one were to object to this technique, none of the FDA approved (emergency or otherwise) vaccines are clear of this issue.

Given Wiggins applied for a religious exemption, my best guess is that this is the issue for him. If it's more of the "MRNA is a new untested technique" issue, J&J is a more traditional vaccine and that might appeal to the more conservative mindset when it comes to using new medical techniques.

If Wiggins ends up opting for the J&J, he can get it as late as two weeks before opening night and be allowed to play. If he chooses for either of the MRNA two-shot vaccines, the timeline is substantially longer and he'd have to get vaccinated very soon. And of course, if he continues to choose to not be vaccinated, there is a really messy road ahead.

Expand full comment

also can I just take a second to say that the concept of a "religious exemption" is complete f-ing BS. It frames the whole thing as some sort of punishment -- it's not, it's about keeping people safe. Can a doctor get a religious exemption from washing his hands before performing surgery? 😡

These are probably the two of the more reasonable stances you could take, there's a whole world of other bullshit it could be too. I wish he would just come out and say what his reasoning is so we can know how pissed off to be.

2EARLY2TELL POLL: Who do you guys think will take the 15th spot?

As much as I love the idea of Avery Bradley, he hasn't been good in a couple years. Mulder I think is on the "cut and sign back on a 2 way" path. I just have no idea how any of these guys look now, or what the team is doing with Chiozza

Expand full comment

"He hasn't been good in a couple years."

I've been seeing this sentiment, and honestly don't know where its coming from.

In 2017, Bradley averaged 14 ppg on 41% from the field and 37% from three. In 2018, he averaged 10 ppg on 40% from the field and 35% from three. In 2019, he averaged 8.6 ppg on 44% from the field and 36% from three. In 2020, he was terrible, though its important to note that it was cut off by injury and he was playing very well in 10 games with the heat (47% from the field and 42% from three).

Obviously, his stats aren't amazing, but they would be perfectly fine for a bench player within a contained role. Its not as if Bradley has had this drop off and hasn't performed well for several years, he's actually been remarkable consistent despite some injury problems.

I've been rewatching some highlight games from last year. Last night I watched the first half of Steph's 62 point detonation against the Trailblazers. This was in the middle of Oubre's record-settingly terrible start from three point range as was raised every time he clanked a shot. It was impressive to see he still had a positive impact on the game from the defensive end and with his hustle, securing multiple contested rebounds, drawing a backcourt offensive foul after a made bucket, and in general making himself a complete pest to the other team. Gonna miss that guy.

(Also, Wiggins was a standout defensively as well. Really hoping he gets it together in time to start the season).

it's going to be hard to not fall off on defense. I think a lot of Kerr's early focus on defense was from just looking at the roster. Baze, Oubre, Wiggs, even Wanamaker, were all hella solid on defense but with limited offense.

Feels like the roster is specifically leaning way more offense with OPJ and Bjelica. And I'm assuming Iguodala isn't going to be logging heavy minutes(?)
