On the Klay thread ... we could never compete with Dallas because they DIDN'T HAVE something we DID HAVE: the giant freakin' ghost of Klay's past wondering the halls and locker room in the Chase Center. 941 days spent coming back from two devastating injuries took its toll. That had to be a physical, mental and spiritual journey through hell and back for a guy like Klay smack in the middle years of his prime.

We are hearing a lot of stories about Klay not feeling the love, etc., but I think deep down, for his soul, Klay just needed a change of scenery. Frankly, I think if he stayed, it would have been a mistake, it would have been him doing what the world expected him to do. But the best version of Klay always zigs when the world zags and all the negative stories about what led up to his departure were just breadcrumbs meant to lead Klay back to himself. We all wanted to write Klay's story, we all wanted to write that happy ending in a Warrior's uniform FOR HIM. But if anyone has to write his own story, it's Klay.

And for that, I'm thankful. Because whatever it is, it will be new. It will be original. It will be Klay being Klay and that is good enough for me.

A+ take imo

This is a really good way to look at the Klay situation and I'm going to try to adopt it just as soon as I get a little bit more mature (so probably not this year).

Heard what I thought was a really good comp for Quentin Post from Larry Krueger: Bill Laimbeer. I thought that was a good pull. Big, unathletic 'looking', but an ornery sneaky good defender with a great 3 point shot and high IQ player who can be a hub on offense. One can only hope.

Statistically, Looney was pretty much the same Looney last year as he has been the last few. Did he regress last year or did he just stop to tie his shoes and the league just whizzed by? Recent addition bigs in the league: Wemby, Chet, Lively, Kessler, JJJ3, Sengun. And that is just the Western Conference. How do you keep pace with that if you're Loon? If Post can shoot 3s above league average, I think he will fully displace Loon by the end of the season. My hope is we get Loon to a young upcoming team that needs that high IQ vet leader in the locker room. Joining CP3 in San Antonio, helping to mentor Wemby, something like that. He still has a lot to offer the league from a character standpoint for sure. But I think his offensive limitations are going to push him out of this particular Warriors roster.

However, if he became our Udonis Haslem, and just rode the last roster spot for the next several years and even retire a Warrior, I would be very happy with that, too. There's only one Loon.

Expand full comment

Laimbeer was also a sneaky mean player. A rough player. So not sure I want to see that from Post.

Expand full comment

That's a great ASPIRATIONAL comp. There's not much info, yet, for a real comp.

I am not sure about the statistics (I'd bet his rebounding stats from last year didn't look like the 2-3 years before that at least) but the eyeball test tells a different story. Less hustle, way less ability to keep players in front of him, etc. A lot of things that don't really show up in stats. I don't agree that the game has passed by a top rebounder and defender who also contributes to offense by setting bone crushing screens and doing what he's supposed to do to free up Steph and other scorers. Loon just didn't do that stuff as well last season and I hope that whatever caused the regression can be remedied this season because if we do get last season Loon going forward then I also agree that there isn't much place for him here beyond, as you say, a Haslem role.

A request:

Now that the Slo-Mo and Hield trades are official, would it be possible to see an updated version of Perks' cap spreadsheet?

If it's already posted, my apologies. I went back through the previous few stories and didn't see it, but I may be blind.

I'm curious how close we are to the 1st apron level.

I was a little surprised that they didn't leave a little room for an in-season injury minimum signing.

One could also also argue (if we’re talking in terms of “betrayal”) that Klay willingly signed with a team in Texas for $16.7M a year after turning down $24M a year to stay a Warrior through the end of Steph’s contract.

I know, it’’s out there…

Expand full comment

Yeah this is so accurate, that I don’t know what universe Dino resides in. One where Jarrett Jack and Mark Jackson led us to the promised land? I remember those “betrayals” too, going back to GSOM. Along with how big of a mistake it was to trade Harrison Barnes.

I could be frustrated reading Dino’s pet rants that he beats into the earth’s core but then I remember every move he seemingly hates has always been followed by more Warrior championships. So it’s maybe like a good luck charm each time. Shame about all the YELLING though.

He does tend to come around, tho. He protested till blue in the face about trading Monta for Bogut (and wanted to trade both Steph and Klay for Dwight Howard) and about benching DLee for Dray … and now look how he cherishes the DYNASTIC CORE. 😎

Dino’s just a fiercely loyal dude. Used to rile me up, now I respect and admire it. In the end he comes around to rooting for the laundry like everyone else; just takes him longer than the average fan to transfer his affections from departing players to the new ones. In the meantime, we’ll get the reminders every time Klay has a good game with Dallas (as with Monta, Jack, DLee, HB before him). It is what it is.

Anyway, when he’s in grieving mode no amount of cold logic will sway him (e.g. “look, Klay is no longer elite;” or “look, he left of his own volition;” or “look, trading Monta for Bogut and installing a Steph/Klay backcourt could end up pretty okay for this team.”) So I’m personally gonna give him a wide berth on Klay. … or try to, lol. I’ll keep conversing with him cos he’s my guy, but I’m not gonna let his attachment to departed players frustrate me like I used to. It’s our DINO!!! ❤️

Appreciate you, Sleepy.

This is really my first time that I can remember ever commenting about Dino going back to GSOM, so I guess I’ve been patient enough until now. Just really sticks out even more like a sore thumb it seems to me here (maybe we need more seemingly oddball comments like if there were a J-Ridah lamenting nightlife or whatever then maybe I’d get sensitized faster haha) but I think the all caps stuff has a lot to do with it too.

Looks like he’s chilled out on that since I posted tho, but yeah regardless I’ll do my best to keep scrolling rather than get riled up.

Again, appreciate you, Sleepy!

My opinions here and on GSoM are my own, of course.

If I were gonna criticize Kerr and the FO for anything on the Klay front, it’d be for coddling him and overplaying him when his poor play (especially on D) would have gotten most other players benched a lot sooner.

I don’t really get how “selling out” applies here, but feel free to explain, as long as I’m in “wide berth” mode. 😊

By the way, aren't you taking this a bit too far....even I laughed at your trade STEPH AND KLAY FOR HOWARD allegation, as I was laughing at the the time with the notion of trading KLAY AND DRAY FOR what was his name that got J WEST all riled up....I was always very clear about MJAX building this team-as KERR also admits-and not being allowed to cross the river into the Promised Land. It was also MJAX that hung DEFENSE AND SMALLBALL on the ID of the DUBS. Yep, methinks if we had hung on to BARNES, AND not BROKEN UP A 'SHIP TEAM to get KD, we would have gone to 2 more finals than we did during the HOMEGROWN CORE PRIME/DYNASTY YEARS, BARNES would be solid dropping 3s and taking it to the rim while defending 1-5, KLAY may have never been hurt, and BOGUT and ANDRE finished their CAREERS with us during the LIGHTYEARS DECADE when the league was breathing our fumes....Known fact Dubs have handled partings poorly....I do know, however when I start getting personal attacks in here, it is because some FO lackies feel exposed....

What is real is by benching KLAY, KERR demonstrated a loss of confidence that was result of either a gross lack of judgement, or, tacit collusive support of the FO beat down strategy of contract negotiations in its desire to reduce its personnel payroll. In a year of rotational debacle due to injuries, suspensions, and ''experimentation'' that dragged on most of the season, benching KLAY, and playing him without the set up gravity of DRAY/STEPH, is encouraging him to fail, or, leave; the latter, advice KERR now admits he gave him.

Hmm...I'd say that is not ''mostly bad'' in the games KLAY played, SLEEPY. FACTOR IN his reduced minutes, benching, KERR's experimenting/rotational debacle due to injuries, suspensions, and, playing without STEPH/DRAY, and he had a solid season.

The Warriors were -0.5 per 100 possessions with him on the floor last season, and +7.1 with him on the bench. -7.6 net.

.576 TS (just below league average) is nothing special when your defense, passing, and rebounding are all well below average for a wing.

Nonsense, SLEEPY. We had a rotational aberration most of the season, thanks to injuries, suspensions, new/young guys….KLAY relies on heavily on his setups; particularly playing with STEPH/DRAY. THAT is his game. OBVIOUSLY, his game was most effected by the mess…purposely, or, inadvertently

As is relevant to my main audience: the Lakers are a first apron team so they can't take back more salary than they send out. Jerami Grant's salary for next season is $29.7 million. Rui+Vincent doesn't quite match so it wouldn't be legal. Lakers would have to cut more money.

Ok, I actually watched the SL game, and I was totally wrong about what happened. The Heat did play defense, and there were some pretty good individual efforts. But they didn’t nail the roatations and that created a lot of openings, especially for Plowden and Thompson. Plus the Summer Dubs played together really well on breaks, and were more tightly connected on defense. Bolden was really strong on defense, that was a pleasure to see. If Plowden, Bolden and Thompson keep playing like this they may net some 2-ways or better contracts.

It was nice to see Pat Spencer start and play most of the game. He has a lot of basketball skills, but enough to make it to the big leagues, I don’t really know. Apparently last season he was recovering from hip surgery, so if he has a bit more explosiveness and speed maybe he could get there? I liked his passing, and that dunk was nasty.

Beekman showed as immature, made a lot of mistakes. Sorkin is probably too slow go far, but I like his stamina - he kept pushing when the Heat (down by 30+) were losing motivation.

Can someone explain this to me (from the hoopsrumor article on the trade):

>>they can use Thompson’s outgoing salary to salary-match for both Anderson and Hield, allowing them to give the two players a higher combined salary than what Thompson’s will make

Expand full comment
author

Maybe this helps?

[[

By turning this into a multi-team trade, GSW can pay Hield more. Other teams get side benefits, like DAL not having to use their Hardaway trade exception, and possibly other benefits.

It turns out that the five team trade will solve that problem. GSW will no longer technically have to use a trade exception (which would have required Hield and Anderson’s salary to sum to less than Klay’s salary). It will just be a normal (if large) trade of Klay for Hield and Anderson where salaries don’t have to match exactly. (For trades of less than 29m for sub-first-apron teams, they can take back outgoing salary + 7.5m.)

Not at all.

[[

The Warriors will NOT have the legendary $16m trade exception in this restructured trade.

A trade exception only is created when you trade out more salary than you take in.

This happened in the alternate reality where Klay was traded to DAL for two 2nds.

But because this is the moratorium, no trades are official until Jul 6 9am Pacific. So this gave time for GSW and DAL to convince everyone to turn this into a five-way trade instead of (trading out Klay, getting a trade exception, and then using that on the Hield and Anderson deals).

i Just finished watching the recording of the Summer League game.

Thompson had 27 points (3-6 threes and 6-9 twos) and 7 rebounds in 21:47.

Plowden had 26 points (6-9 threes) and a +41 in 23:38.

Spencer had 16 points on 7-8 shooting, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds in 26:30.

Bolden had 13 rebounds, 6 blocks, 6 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 21:45.

Rowe had 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in 21:03.

Beekman had 10 points (2-3 threes), 1 assist, and 1 block in 20:46.

Sorkin had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block in 18:15.

Exactly one team played excellent team basketball on both ends of the floor.

13-31 threes (42%)

29 of 44 twos (66%)

50 vs. 32 rebounds

23 vs. 11 assists
